A Khalistan flag was discovered atop a bridge on the Amritsar-Delhi national highway in Haryana's Ambala district on Saturday, prompting police to file a case against an unknown person, news agency PTI reported citing police officials.
Police also discovered some pro-Khalistan slogans inscribed under the bridge near the Shambhu toll plaza near Ambala city, as per the report.
According to police, a case has been filed against an unknown person in this matter, and additional investigation is continuing.
After receiving information, police removed the flag and wiped away the slogans.
Previously, after a string of alleged vandalism of Hindu temples in Australia, a Lakshmi temple in Brisbane was vandalised. According to initial reports, Khalistani followers were allegedly responsible for the anti-India graffiti and attacks on the shrine.
Punjab is in crisis as a succession of violent occurrences has shaken people's trust and faith in the state's law-and-order system. The most egregious example is the recent attack on a police station in Amritsar in broad daylight.
On February 23, a mob armed with swords, rifles, and sharp weapons stormed the Ajnala police station, just a few kilometres from the international border with Pakistan, led by self-styled Sikh preacher and pro-Khalistan propagator Amritpal Singh. They opposed Amritpal's close accomplice, Lovepreet Singh alias Toofan Singh, being arrested in an alleged kidnapping and theft case. Amritpal urged that the FIR filed against Lovepreet and he is dropped and that his aide be released.
Amritpal, who called the FIR "politically motivated," issued a threat: if his demands were not granted, "the government would be liable for whatever happened," he added. He even cautioned the police not to file an FIR in the instance of the Ajnala incident.
