Nafe Singh Rathee, president of the Haryana's Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), and a party member were killed on Sunday when unidentified gunmen opened fire on their SUV in Bahadurgarh near Delhi, according to a senior party official. Three private shooters engaged by Rathee for protection were also wounded in the incident. According to ANI, the police have named four suspects in their FIR: Naresh Kaushik, Ramesh Rathi, Sathish Rathi, and Rahul.

On Haryana INLD chief Nafe Singh Rathee's death, Jhajjar DSP Shamsher Singh stated: "We are collecting evidence from all CCTV cameras and also checking the suspected vehicle."

"We have registered an FIR on the basis of the complaint received. Five teams have been constituted with 2 DSPs to arrest the accused. Investigation is underway. We are collecting physical and scientific evidence," he further stated.

“After my father’s death, his body was shifted to the mortuary at around 3 to 3:30 am and an FIR was registered at around 4 am. We will not perform the last rites of my father until the names of the accused mentioned in the FIR are arrested and we are provided security. I think local politicians are involved in this,” Haryana INLD chief’s son Jitendra Rathee stated.

The tragic incident, which occurred weeks before the Lok Sabha elections, sparked strong protests from opposition parties, who claimed a breakdown in law and order in the BJP-ruled state.

According to INLD leader Abhay Chautala, Rathee and a party member who was with him were shot dead. Three private shooters hired by Rathee for protection were also injured, according to Chautala. “No police security had been given to him," he stated.

Chautala later went to the hospital in Bahadurgarh, where the remains was kept. Speaking to reporters there, he demanded a CBI investigation into the incident.

Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij stated that he talked with officials and instructed them to take quick action in the situation.

He stated the Special Task Force is looking into the incident and that the perpetrators would be apprehended shortly.

Chautala later visited the hospital in Bahadurgarh where the remains were housed and asked that the CBI investigate the event. Meanwhile, another party leader stated that at least 20 shots were fired at the lawmaker.
