Haryana Speaker Admits No-Confidence Motion Against Manhoar Lal Khattar Govt

Haryana Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta accepted a no-confidence motion moved by the Congress against the Manohar Lal Khattar government.

Haryana Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta on Tuesday allowed a no-confidence motion moved by the main Opposition party, Congress, against the Manohar Lal Khattar government. The Speaker has scheduled the debate for Thursday, as reported by the PTI.

Gupta sanctioned the no-confidence motion after 18 MLAs voted in favour of the no-confidence motion, as stipulated by the rules.

According to news agency PTI, Leader of Opposition in the Haryana Assembly Bhupinder Singh Hooda recently criticised the Khattar government for its failure on all fronts of governance. He had indicated that the Congress would come up with a no-confidence motion during the ongoing session.

Party leaders stated that the Congress would also focus on topics like the state's "rising unemployment rate, irregularities in the skill employment corporation, hiring outsiders in Haryana and giving them preference, the state's deteriorating law & order situation, and recruitment scams".

The Congress had also presented a no-confidence motion against the BJP-JJP coalition government three years ago but was defeated.

Referring back to the earlier no-confidence motion, Chief Minister Khattar said that he had challenged the opposition to bring forward this motion at each session so they could learn about the work his government was doing. If not, he had said, they merely talk without listening. Khattar emphasised that if Congress submits another no-confidence motion, they will be compelled to acknowledge the government's achievements.

The BJP holds 41 seats in the 90-member House, while its coalition partner, the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), has 10.

Additionally, six out of the seven Independent members in the House support the BJP, which also receives backing from the lone MLA of the Haryana Lokhit Party, Gopal Kanda. The principal opposition, Congress, has 30 MLAs, while the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) has one seat.

Chief Minister of Haryana Manohar Lal Khattar had earlier declared that the NDA would secure over 400 seats and the BJP would surpass its goal of gaining over 370 seats in the next Lok Sabha elections. He added that the BJP will win Haryana's ten Lok Sabha seats.
