Two home guards were killed and at least 15 others, including cops left injured in Haryana's Nuh where a clash erupted between two groups after stones were pelted during a religious procession and cars were set on fire earlier in the day. Police lobbed teargas shells to disperse crowds and called for reinforcements from other areas as the two sides pelted stones at each other, news agency PTI reported. Mobile internet and messaging services have been suspended in the area.

Earlier in the day, Vishva Hindu Parishad's Brij Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra was stopped by a group of young men near Khedla Mod in Nuh and stones were thrown at the procession, the police said, as per PTI's report. People in the procession allegedly hurled stones back at the youths who had stopped them.

Another police officer verified that one of the home guards, identified as Neeraj, died due to a gunshot wound while eight of the injured police personnel were taken to Gurugram’s Medanta Hospital.

  • At least four cars that were part of the procession were set on fire. Some police vehicles were also damaged, as per PTI's report.

  • Prohibitory orders banning the assembly of people have been clamped in Nuh and Gurugram districts. Mobile internet and SMS services have been suspended till August 2 (Wednesday) to contain the intense communal tension, the Haryana government stated.

  • Nuh Deputy Commissioner Prashant Panwar told news agency ANI that police are investigating the matter. "Section 144 has been imposed in the district. Curfew orders have been given... We appeal to all to maintain peace," he said, emphasising that the situation is normal while a curfew has been imposed in the district.

  • Appealing for peace, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar assured the "strictest action" in Nuh violence where a clash erupted between two groups after stones were pelted during a religious procession.

"Today's incident is unfortunate, I appeal to all the people to maintain peace in the state. The guilty will not be spared at any cost, strictest action will be taken against them," the Chief Minister tweeted.

  • About 2,500 men, women, and children who had taken shelter at a Shiv temple in Nuh were evacuated by police, Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij said, as per PTI.

Earlier, Vij said that adequate force is being deployed at the spot. "We've also spoken to the Centre, three companies will be sent to rescue people. Internet services will be suspended so that people don't spread rumours. We are trying to restore peace at the earlier. I appeal to everyone to restore peace," he said, as quoted by ANI.

All those who are stranded in different areas of Mewat region are being rescued, he added.

  • The Union Home Ministry stated that it is dispatching 15 additional companies of central forces to Haryana, as violence also erupted in Sohna in neighbouring Gurugram district, adjacent to Delhi.

"There were attempts by a few people to do stone pelting in Sohna after the reports of Mewat clashes but the situation is under control now. Social media is being monitored and police have been deployed," Nitish Agarwal, Deputy Commissioner Of Police, Gurugram told PTI.

  • A video of a flag march by Haryana Police following the violence surfaced on social media.

  • The yatra was flagged off from Gurugram’s Civil Lines by BJP district president Gargi Kakkar earlier and a police contingent was deployed with the procession.

  • As per PTI, it was claimed that the trigger for the clash was an objectionable video posted on social media by a Bajrang Dal activist in Ballabhgarh. It cited reports stating that Monu Manesar, a cow vigilante wanted in the murder of two Muslim men in Rajasthan, was supposed to join the procession.

“The situation in the area is stable," Nuh SHO Hukam Singh said later, as quoted by the agency.
