New Delhi: The month of April is filled with festivities, and one such important festival is Baisakhi also known as Vaisakhi. The festival this year falls on April 14.  Baisakhi is mainly celebrated in Punjab and neighbouring regions including Haryana.

Baisakhi also marks the start of the harvest season and commencement of the Sikh New Year.

The festival holds significance because on the eve of Baisakhi, Guru Gobind Singh rallied Sikhs to fight against Mughals and inspired them through his words and actions. This day is considered auspicious among Hindus since it marks the beginning of the Hindu solar New Year.

On Baisakhi, Sikhs also participate in Nagar Kirtans and spend the day witnessing skill display by Khalsas. People also recite Gurbani and sing hymns to pay tribute to Guru Granth Sahib which is the holy book of the Sikhs.

Dance performances including Bhangra and Gidda are a common feature on this day. In various places, fairs are organised on Baisakhi.
