A video from Gujarat’s Jamnagar on Thursday showed MLA Rivaba Jadeja, Mayor Binaben Kothari, and MP Poonamben Maadam engaged in a heated exchange of words during an event. As the video of the incident went viral, the Jamnagar North MLA claimed that the quarrel took place after MP Maadam called her “ignorant” and “over-smart” for removing her slippers to pay tributes to Bravehearts. According to news agency IANS, the incident occurred during a BJP event held under the ‘Mera Desh Meri Mitti’ campaign.

In the widely-circulated video, Rivaba Jadeja, the wife of cricketer Ravindra Jadeja, is seen addressing the city Mayor and the Lok Sabha MP in an apparent angry tone.

Defending herself about the heated exchange, the Jamnagar North MLA said, “MP Poonamben Maadam paid tribute to the Bravehearts by wearing slippers and I took off the slippers. She said in a loud voice that even the PM and the President do not remove slippers in such programs but some ignorant people become over-smart.”

“I did not like his comment, so I spoke out of self-respect...Did I make a mistake by taking off my slippers?” she remarked, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, state BJP chief C.R. Paatil said that he will gather additional information about the incident, IANS reported.

Mayor Binaben Kothari refused to talk about the spat saying, “It's an internal matter of the party, and I prefer not to comment further on this”, IANS reported.

Rivaba joined the BJP in 2019 and secured her position as a first-time MLA from the traditionally dominant urban seat of Jamnagar in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly elections.

Poonamben Madam has been a BJP MP since 2014. The City Mayor Kothari is a notable party figure locally with affiliations to RSS-linked organisations, as per an IANS report.
