New Delhi: A civic volunteer of Kolkata Police has been suspended after a video, showing him thrashing a man for allegedly snatching a woman's bag in a bus, went viral on Sunday.

The incident was caught on camera as the on-duty Kolkata Police officer was seen kicking and beating the alleged accused who tried to escape.

The video also shows another man holding the accused by his head and shouting at him, asking him to return whatever he took. In the video, several other people could be seen surrounding both the accused snatcher and the civic volunteer.

The civic volunteer is a part of the 'Green Police' in West Bengal. The 'Green Police' is formed as an aid for the state police. The 'Green Police' does not have any arrest or search powers, but helps in maintaining the law and order situation and traffic.

The incident took place on Sunday, and after the video went viral, the on-duty Kolkata Police civic volunteer, who is visible in the video, has been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been initiated against the officials of South Traffic Guard present at the spot.

Taking note of the situation, Kolkata Police Commissioner Soumen Mitra said, “I am shocked and embarrassed. This kind of behaviour by a member of my force is not expected. The civic volunteer has been demobilised. A departmental inquiry has also been instituted to recommend remedial measures. The officers concerned will be investigated for a breach of discipline.”
