New Delhi: Dinesh Gundu Rao, the Goa in-charge of the All India Congress Committee, has invited Goa Forward Party (GFP) president Vijai Sardesai for a meeting with the party’s state unit chief, Girish Chodankar, on December 11.
"I have invited Sri @VijaiSardesai, President of @Goaforwardparty for a meeting with Sri @girishgoa, President of @INCGoa and others on 11/12/21, 10 am at Congress Election Office, Patto Plaza, Panjim,” Rao said in a tweet.
The meeting is likely to be regarding alliance talks between the two parties for the upcoming 2022 Assembly polls in the state.
Sardesai had met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi last month and it was reported then that the former ally of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would contest the election in alliance with the grand old party.
When asked to comment on the tie-up, Congress leader and senior observer for Goa Assembly polls P Chidambaram, however, said on Thursday "the word alliance is used indiscriminately".
"So far, we had one party leader (GFP chief) Vijai Sardesai who came to Delhi and said, in order to defeat the BJP, my party offers support to the Congress'. Rahul Gandhi said we accept the support. All other details have to be discussed further," Chidambaram said.
According to a PTI report, Sardesai’s party was to meet later on Thursday and decide on the invite.
Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is scheduled to visit Goa on Friday where she would launch the party’s election campaign, according to reports.
News agency ANI reported that the Congress leader will visit Assolna, where she will pay her respects at the Martyrs’ Memorial.
She is also scheduled to meet tribal women and share a meal with them at Morpirla in Quepem taluka, besides interacting with 'Amchem Mollem' student activists at MCC Hall, Margao, the ANI report said.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will also address 'Priyadarshani', a women's convention, at the Costa ground in Aquem, according to the report.
