Patanjali's Claim about 'COVID medicine Coronil'

Patanjali Ayurveda launched the ‘Coronil and Swasari’ products on Tuesday, with the claim that it has successfully cured scores of under-trial Covid-19 patients with 100% results except for those on life support systems.

Ramdev had claimed that the first clinical controlled study was conducted on 280 patients in Delhi and Ahmedabad among many other cities.

He mentioned that a clinical case study and clinical controlled trial had been conducted which found that 69% and 100% of the patients recovered in three and 7 days respectively. The 'Coronil' medicine is a part of a kit that also comprises another tablet and an oil. According to Baba Ramdev, active compounds of Ashwagandha, Giloy, and Tulsi had been used in 'Coronil'. He claimed that the entire kit would help in strengthening the immunity of a person.

"The medicines have been developed by Patanjali Research Center, Haridwar and privately-owned National Institute of Medical Science, Jaipur following all protocols with clinically controlled trial-based evidence", said Ramdev.

AYUSH Ministry's response

The Ministry of AYUSH issued a clarification on Patanjali Ayurved Ltd.'s claim that its new medicines would help in treating the novel coronavirus. It stated that the facts and details in this regard were not known to the Union government. Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. was informed that such advertisements of drugs are regulated under the provisions of Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954 and Rules thereunder and the directives issued by the Centre in the wake of COVID-19 outbreak.

The ministry asked Patanjali to submit details of the sample size, sites, and hospitals where the research study was conducted and also for the Institutional Ethics Committee clearance.

Guidelines by AYUSH Ministry for CORONA remedies

In a guideline issued in April this year, the AYUSH ministry had laid down several conditions for organizations researching remedies of Covid-19 infection through the use of traditional medicine.

According to the ministry, AYUSH registered practitioner/expert should be part of the study/research team at each site and the research should be conducted in line with AYUSH guidelines for clinical research or ICMR guidelines.

It must also comply with relevant regulations for biomedical and health research and good clinical practice guidelines along with national ethical guidelines. Among other conditions, the proposal/research should be approved by their scientific advisory bodies and institutional ethics committee.
