GHMC Election Results 2020: In the crucial Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls which saw a high-pitched contest between TRS, AIMIM, BJP and Congress, the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) surpassed other parties in the early trends while Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM is emerging as second. BJP is at the third position in the trends, while Congress seems to be struggling to remain in the race.
At 4 pm the trends are as follows:
TRS: 70
AIMIM: 45
BJP: 31
Congress: 4
1st result went to MIM:
MIM retained Mehdipatnam division as its candidate and former mayor Mohammed Majid Hussain was declared elected. Meanwhile, TRS also opened its account when its candidate Rajkumar Patel was declared elected from Yousufguda division.
The AIMIM said its candidates have won in Dabeerpura, Ramnaspura, Doodhbowli, Kishanbagh, Nawab, Sahab Kunta, Barkas, Pattergatti, Puranapoo, Riyastnagar, and Ahmed Nagar divisions.
Fortune of 1,122 candidates at stake
The high-stake municipal polls saw an unprecedented campaigning by political bigwigs despite being a local level election. The counting of votes are going on since morning for 150 wards and the political fortunes of 1,122 candidates are at stake.
The Bharatiya Janata Party, which invested hugely in the high-octane campaign got off to a good start with postal ballots, but later could not sustain their lead. Union Ministers Amit Shah, Prakash Javadekar and Smriti Irani, BJP president J. P. Nadda and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath saw campaigning for BJP, which fought hard to wrest the key municipal body from TRS.
In 2016 elections, TRS had captured GHMC with landslide majority of 99 in 150-member body. MIM was second largest party with 44 seats while BJP was a distant with only four seats.
