G7 Summit: From Dokra Art, Gulabi Meenakari Brooch To Black Pottery, Know What PM Modi Gifted World Leaders

PM gifted Gulabi Meenakari brooch and cufflink set from Varanasi to US President Joe Biden.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who met several leaders on the sidelines of the G-7 summit at Schloss Elmau, presented gifts to his counterparts reflecting India's rich and diverse heritage. Modi attended the two-day summit held this week following an invitation by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.  Each items gifted from India showcased distinctive traditions of the states from where they were sourced.  

Gift To US President Joe Biden

PM gifted Gulabi Meenakari brooch and cufflink set from Varanasi to US President Joe Biden. The Gulabi Meenakari brooch is a piece of pure silver which is moulded into a base form where the chosen design is embossed in the metal. It is a GI tagged art-form of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, reported news agency ANI.

Gift To French President Emmanuel Macron

Macron was gifted a carrier box crafted in Lucknow. The Zari Zardozi box was hand embroidered on khadi silk and satin tissue in the three colours of the French National Flag, which has its origin in the French Revolution. The box included Attar Mitti – a unique attar produced in UP's Kannauj – Jasmine Oil, Attar Shamama, Attar Gulab, Exotic Musk, and Garam Masala.

Gift To UK PM Boris Johnson

Modi gifted platinum hand painted tea set from Bulandhshahr district to British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. According to Prime Minister's Office, the crockery has been outlined with platinum metal paint in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s platinum jubilee being celebrated this year.

PM gifted Metal Marodi carving matka, a nickel coated and hand engraved brass vessel from Moradabad, the Peetal Nagari or “brass city” of Uttar Pradesh to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Gift To South African President Cyril Ramaphosa

Modi gifted Dokra Art with Ramayana theme from Chattisgarh to South African counterpart.  Dokra Art is non–ferrous metal casting art using the lost-wax casting technique. This sort of metal casting has been used in India for over 4,000 years and is still used. Modi met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and welcomed the WTO agreement reached in June that supports the production of COVID-19 vaccines in developing countries.

Gift To Indonesia President Joko Widodo

PM Modi gifted Lacquerware Ram Durbar from Varanasi to Indonesia President. The wooden statues of gods, goddesses and sacred animals served as coveted souvenirs taken back by pilgrims. This particular piece is made on Goolar (Botanical name: Ficus Racemosa) wood.

Gift To Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández

He presented another piece of Dokra Art with Nandi-themed to Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández. The particular art-piece is a figure of ‘Nandi –The Meditative Bull’. According to Hindu mythology Nandi is considered as the vehicle (mount) of Lord Shiva, the lord of destruction

Gift To Italy Prime Minister Mario Draghi 

For Draghi, PM Modi had taken Marble Inlay table top to Germany. This marble table top with Inlay work has its origin in Agra. Made of semi precious stones with gradients in their colour, this table top is very similar to Italian marble inlay work, according to PMO, reported news agency ANI.

On the first day of his trip, the PM interacted with the Indian community in Germany at the Audi Dome, Munich. The main focus of the G7 heads of state and government on the second day remained their support for Ukraine.

On his way back from G-7 Summit, Modi will halt in United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Tuesday to pay his condolences on the passing away of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the former president of the Gulf nation.

Earlier in May, Modi had presented gifts from India to various dignitaries from Nordic nations he met during his three-day tour.

He had then gifted a rogan painting, a cloth printing practiced in Gujarat's Kutch, to Danish queen Margrethe, a silver meenakari bird figure from Banaras to crown princess Mary and a brass tree of life from Rajasthan to his Finland counterpart, reported PTI.
