Putin, Trudeau In Attendance But Xi To Skip G20 Virtual Summit Chaired By PM Modi

The G20 virtual summit, hosted by India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be attended by Vladimir Putin and Justin Trudeau but Xi Jinping will skip the meeting.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trueadu will attend the virtual G20 summit that will be hosted by India on Wednesday. Chinese President Xi Jinping will, however, skip the meeting and the Chinese side will be represented by Premier Li Qiang. 

The Virtual G20 Leaders’ Summit will be held from 5:30 pm onwards under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The summit will address key issues, select outcomes and action points from the New Delhi Summit in September, and review developments that have happened since then.

Putin To Attend The Meet 

President Vladimir Putin will attend the virtual summit, said the Kremlin in an official statement. The Russian President had skipped the G20 Leaders’ Summit that took place in New Delhi in September this year. 

"On November 22, Vladimir Putin will take part in the extraordinary G20 summit, to be held via videoconference," the Kremlin said in an official statement, reported ANI.

"The summit participants will review India's presidency in 2023 and discuss the situation in the global economy and finance, the climate agenda, digitalisation and other topics," the Kremlin said.

Trudeau To Attend The Virtual Summit 

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will also be in attendance during the meeting amid a diplomatic stand-off between New Delhi and Ottawa over the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. 

Trudeu’s office confirmed in a release his schedule for Wednesday which includes the G20 virtual summit, according to ANI. 

Xi Jinping To Skip the Meeting 

Chinese President Xi Jinping, who did not attend the September summit in New Delhi will not participate in the Wednesday meeting as well, reported ANI. China will be represented during the meeting by Premier Li Qiang 

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, China's Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed the Chinese Premier's presence at the G20 Summit.

"In the face of the volatile international situation and sluggish economic recovery, it is all the more important for the G20 to reinforce partnership, address global challenges through cooperation and make a positive contribution to world economic recovery and global common development," the Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said.
