Mahesh Ahir, nephew of former Union minister of state for home affairs Hansraj Ahir, and his friend Harish Dhote were on Wednesday found hanging from trees in Chandigarh’s Sector 52.
Hansraj Ahir, a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Lok Sabha MP from Chandrapur, is currently chairperson of the National Commission for Backward Classes.
The deceased, in their mid-20s, were natives of Chandrapur in Maharashtra, and had been missing from March 14.
"Family members then filed a missing person complaint at Chandrapur police station on March 15 and Superintendent of Police Ravindrasinh Pardeshi had sent a team to Chandigarh.
On Wednesday evening, Ahir and Dhote were found hanging from trees in Chandigarh," PTI quoted him as saying.
The police tracked their cell phone location at Haridwar. Soon after, some family members travelled to Uttarakhand in their search.
According to police, a passer-by noticed two persons hanging from trees in a forested patch in Sector 52 of Chandigarh around 1 pm on Wednesday and informed the police. The police immediately into action and took the duo Government Multi-Speciality Hospital in Sector 16, where doctors declared them brought dead.
The victims were found with travel tickets on them that showed they had taken a bus on Wednesday morning from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, to get to the city. Glasses and a liquor bottle were found at the scene.
Charanjeet Singh Virk, DSP, south-west division, said no external injury marks were found on the bodies. "We are investigating the case from all angles," Times of India quoted Virk as saying.
As per the police official, relatives of the deceased left for Chandigarh to get the remains of both men.
Mahesh was the son of Harishchandra Ahir, elder brother of National Commission of Backward Classes chairman Hansraj Ahir. Mortal remains of both Mahesh and Harish are expected to be brought to Chandrapur late on Thursday.
