Amarinder Singh To Launch His Own Political Party, Says 'Hopeful Of Arrangement With BJP In Punjab'

Singh is hopeful of a seat arrangement with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2022 Punjab Assembly polls if the farmers' protest is resolved in farmers’ interest. 

Chandigarh: Ending month's long speculations about the future of his political career, former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder on Tuesday said that he will soon announce the launch of his own political party. 

The information was shared by Raveen Thukral, media advisor to Singh.

"Will soon announce the launch of my own political party to serve the interests of Punjab & its people, including our farmers," tweeted Thukral.

"The battle for Punjab’s future is on. Will soon announce the launch of my own political party to serve the interests of Punjab & its people, including our farmers who’ve been fighting for their survival for over a year," he wrote in another tweet.

Thukral also said that Singh is hopeful of a seat arrangement with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2022 Punjab Assembly polls if the farmers' protest is resolved in farmers’ interest. 

Earlier, scotching speculation to the contrary, Singh had said that he will not join BJP and will continue to work for the development of the people of Punjab. 

Soon after quitting the Congress party, Singh had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in the national capital, fueling speculations of him joining the saffron party.

However, he said that he raised security concerns with Home Minister Amit Shah, along with the farmers' issue, during his meeting with the latter.

Even the BJP was ready to welcome him, saying Singh is a nationalist and all nationalists are welcomed in the party.

BJP is seeking an alliance with Captain as he can play an important role in pacifying the farmers, who are protesting for almost a year against the three farm laws.

Thukral also informed that Singh looking at alliances with like-minded parties such as breakaway Akali groups.

The announcement comes amid reports doing rounds that Captain's new party will be 'Punjab Vikas Party'.

According to sources close to news agency IANS, Singh will convene a meeting of leaders close to him in a few days to consider the formation of his new party, which will include all the leaders of the anti-Sidhu faction.

Soon after quitting as Punjab CM, Singh has said that his first goal is to defeat former Punjab Congress President Navjot Singh Sidhu.
