New Delhi: Former President APJ Abdul Kalam was fondly remembered by India today on his fifth death anniversary. The aerospace scientist who is also known as the 'missile man of India' served as the country's 11th president from 2002 to 2007. Before getting involved in politics, Kalam worked as a scientist mainly with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). He was involved in India's civilian space programme and military missile development work. He worked on the development of ballistic missile and launch vehicle technology. He also played a significant role in India’s 1998 nuclear test Pokhran-II. After a single term, Kalam who was known as the 'People's President' returned to a life of teaching and writing. He died from an apparent cardiac arrest on 27 July 2015, aged 83 while delivering a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong.
