New Delhi: Rashtriya Janata Dal chief (RJD) Lalu Prasad Yadav has been awarded 5 years of imprisonment in the Doranda treasury case by a special CBI court in Ranchi today. A fine of Rs 60 Lakh has also been imposed on him by the court.
The quantum of punishment was pronounced by Judge S K Shashi through video conferencing.
While speaking to the media after the court passed the order, Lalu Yadav's lawyer said he will challenge the sentencing in the Supreme Court.
The RJD chief was convicted by the special CBI court under sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471 of the Indian penal Code (IPC), along with section 120B related to conspiracy and section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The Doranda treasury scam is related to the illegal withdrawal of Rs 139.35 crore from Doranda Treasury, and is considered as the biggest fodder scam in the country.
On February 15, the court had pronounced 38 accused including former Bihar Chief Minister Lalu Prasad guilty of the crime.
The Rs 950 crore fodder scam took place in the Animal Husbandry department of Bihar during the tenure of Prasad as the chief minister of the state. The CBI had registered 53 separate cases in 1996 to probe the scam.
