Earthquake in Maharashtra: A 2-year-old girl lost her life in Palghar today when strong tremors measuring between 3-3.5 on the Richter scale hit Maharashtra's Palghar district on Friday. Three earthquakes measuring 4.1, 3.6 and 3.5 on the Richter scale hit the district today at 2:06 pm, 3:53 pm and 4:57 pm respectively. The region has been experiencing such tremors routinely since November last year.

As per the report, the experts believe Palghar is prone to earthquakes as the region falls under seismic zone number 3. On January 21, an earthquake of magnitude 3.0 on the Richter scale hit Palghar region. This was the second tremor within three hours that struck the region. On January 20, a 3.6 magnitude quake hit Palghar region and tremors were registered in and around Dundalwadi near Dahanu.

Meanwhile, two earthquakes of minor intensity on Thursday hit Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand. According to the India Meteorological Department, the first earthquake 2.8 on the Richter scale was reported at 11.23 a.m. The second measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale came at 11.58 a.m.

However, there was no loss of life and property reported from anywhere in the area, officials said. However, some panic-stricken people residing on the hilltops in the district came out of their houses. Uttarakhand is also prone to seismic activities due to various faults. Some scientists have predicted major earthquakes in the future.
