According to the private earthquake monitoring agencies, the epicentre is somewhere in Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. It has been measured at 6.3 on the Richter scale. So far, there have been no reports of damage or loss of life and property in any part of Jammu and Kashmir.
However, Pakistani media reported that 19 people have lost their lives and as many as over 300 were injured in the neighbouring country. Several Indian cities including Chandigarh, Amritsar and Srinagar were jolted by heavy tremors.
Speaking about the earthquake and its effect in the valley, Kashmir Zone Police said that no damages have been reported so far. We are ascertaining details from the ground-level.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was 3 kilometres from New Mirpur city, the capital of Mirpur district and the largest city of the PoK.
News agency PTI, quoting local Pakistan media, reported that injured people, including women and children, were shifted to a hospital in Mirpur in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after a building collapsed following the earthquake.
