New Delhi: India and the US on Tuesday, inked three MoUs, including one in energy sector and discussed "every important aspect" of their partnership, including defence and security. In a joint media address with US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that the two countries have decided to take Indo-US ties to comprehensive global partnership level.


The President of the United States thanked Prime Minister Modi for the grand welcome accorded to him and paid respect to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi. He said he was optimistic of reaching a deal of "great importance" with India.

Here are the key highlights of Trump’s speech:

  • Trump announced that the two countries have finalised defence deals worth USD 3 billion and asserted that their focus was on having a comprehensive trade deal.The relations between the two countries have never been as good as they are now, Trump said, adding that the countries have made "wonderful deal".

  • The US President hailed the ceremonial welcome accorded to him. “The visit was great; We will remember welcome accorded to us,” he said.

  • The visit has been unforgettable, extraordinary and productive, he said.

  • Other than finalising defence deals worth USD 3 billion, we discussed 5G telecom technology, situation in Indo-Pacific, Trump said.

  • There was focus on having comprehensive trade deal, he said in his address.

  • This has been a very productive talk. We have decided to expand our defence cooperation, and cooperation in dealing with cross-border terrorism, and in cyber-security.

  • We agreed to cooperate in dealing with radical Islamic terrorism, he said.

  • We decided to set up counter-narcotic centre, Trump asserted.

  • We are working on blue dot network for sustainable projects, he said after talks with PM Modi.

  • "Our teams have made tremendous progress for a comprehensive trade agreement & I'm optimistic we can reach a deal of great importance to both countries. Since I took office, US exports to India are up nearly 60% & exports of high quality American energy have grown by 500%," he said.

  • “The first lady and I also reflected on the memories of Mahatma Gandhi in his ashram, we saw the majestic Taj Mahal, we look forward to state banquet at the Presidential palace,” he said in his opening remark.
