'Didi Is Winning Nandigram': TMC Dismisses PM Modi's Speculation Of Mamata Banerjee Contesting Polls From Another Seat

Several incidents violence, allegations of booth capturing and clashes marred the second phase of assembly polls in Bengal, especially in the high-profile Nandigram constituency. 

Kolkata: After an action-packed second phase polling in West Bengal Assembly elections which saw sparodic events of violence and clashes, Trinamool Congress (TMC) slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remarks claiming that CM Mamata Banerjee may contest elections from another seat as she knows she is losing from Nandigram seat. 

Earlier in the day, PM Modi took a dig at TMC boss seeking to know if she would contest the polls from another seat, implying her loss in Nandigram is imminent. The Prime Minister was speaking at a poll rally in Bengal's Uluberia. 

Taunting Banerjee, PM Modi said: "Didi, is there any truth in the rumour that you are going to file nomination from another constituency? First you went there (Nandigram), and people gave you an answer. If you go somewhere else, people of Bengal are ready."

Hours after PM Modi's jibe, ruling dispensation in Bengal clarified that Mamata Banerjee harboured no such intention. 

"Didi is winning Nandigram. The question of her fighting from another seat doesn't arise. @narendramodi Ji, retract from your efforts to mislead people before they see your lies with the end of nomination in WB. Look for a safer seat in 2024, as you will be challenged in Varanasi," the party tweeted from its official Twitter handle.

However, the Election Commission informed that about 80.43 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in the second phase polling despite the ferocity which took place in various districts.

Narayangarh (74 per cent), Sabang (81.23 per cent), Pingla (79.50 per cent), Debra (83.10 per cent), Daspur (71.20 per cent), Ghatal (76.29 per cent), Chandrakona (86.28 per cent), Keshpur (82.24 per cent), Taldangra (83.20 per cent), Bankura (72.86 per cent), Barjora (82 per cent), Onda (83.47 per cent), Bishnupur (82.95 per cent), Katulpur (87.21 per cent), Indus (86.57 per cent) and Sonamukhi (85.09 per cent).
