New Delhi: In a major announcement, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday announced free electricity for people who consume upto 200 units in Delhi. The government also announced a 50% subsidy for those whose electricity consumption is between 201 to 400 units.

“This will encourage people to consumer less power and conserve energy. Between 201-400, the existing 'Half Bill' introduced in 2015 will continue” Kejriwal said.

The announcement is set to give major relief to the poor, whose are burdened with bills even though their consumption is less.

Ahead of the big announcement, The Chief Minister also spoke about the “Improvement in Delhi infrastructure in last 4.5 years”.

“Government is committed to provide Lifeline Electricity to all residents, similar to Lifeline Water we already provide. This is our commitment to all Delhi residents that a dignified life is your right” he said.

“The electricity companies were in a very bad state before our government took over. The companies were bankrupt and were on the verge of shutdown. Now, the condition of electricity companies is very good” CM added.

He said there has been no hike in electricity tariffs in the national capital for the fifth consecutive year after power regulator DERC announced a significant reduction in fixed charges.

Congratulating Delhiites, the chief minister said the city has the lowest power tariffs in the country and the only place with 24x7 electricity.

The announcement has come when the Assembly polls are due in Delhi next year.
