NEW DELHI: Days after the Congress party rejected the BJP’s allegation that party president Rahul Gandhi had claimed the party was a Muslim party, Congress' Nadeem Javed, a close aide of party president Rahul Gandhi, took a U-turn from the statement and said Rahul did not say anything wrong.

Nadeem Javed is the Minority Cell President of Congress.

The statement was reportedly made at a meeting with Muslim intellectuals and activists on July 11, as part of the Congress party’s outreach programme before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Urdu daily Inquilab reporter Mumtaz has claimed that Congress president Rahul Gandhi had said, "it is his family's commitment to justice with Muslims".

However, the Congress had said that Rahul had never made this statement and rubbished the report of an Urdu newspaper which quoted Rahul saying, "Yes, Congress is a Muslim party".

"This is absolute lies&shameful spin by the newspaper. The BJP using it to further its own agenda, yet again, exposes their desperate tactics to mislead the nation. However this will not deter us to fight for India's founding principles& its democratic values," Congress leader Priyanka Chaturvedi had tweeted.
