New Delhi: As IMD said in its latest that the Cyclone Nisarga will very likely turn into a severe storm by tonight and will cross close to Mumbai in the next 12 hours, the financial capital has been bracing up for the cyclone's arrival.


IMD has issued a red alert for Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Thane, Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, and Palghar districts as the tropical cyclone is expected to make landfall south of Mumbai.

According to reports, sixteen teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), comprising 45 jawans each, are on alert in the state. While 10 teams have been deployed, six are on standby. Three teams have been deployed in Mumbai, two in Palghar, two in Raigad and one each in Sindhudurg, Ratnagiri and Thane.

The fire department and civic officials have drawn up rescue and relief plans. Nearly 90 lifeguards with life-saving equipment have been stationed at beaches in the city and around 200 expert swimmers, trained for rescue and saving lives, will be on alert, as per reports.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also on high alert as the cyclonic storm is forming near the Mumbai's cost. BMC has said that necessary actions have been taken as per the directions of the Centre and the state government.

Municipal Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal said in a statement that officials from all 24 divisional Offices in Mumbai have been instructed to identify potentially hazardous settlements in their divisions as well as low-lying settlements and evacuate their citizens to nearby schools or safer places.

Fishermen and others are also urged not to go into the sea, stay away from the beach, citizens should not stand under trees and poles, and not to go out of the house during storms.

Large industrial establishments and petrochemical companies in Mumbai have been asked to take appropriate measures to keep their systems and materials safe.


In Mumbai, each district already has a disaster management plan to tackle natural or man-made disasters. The district-wise disaster management plan has detailed information about the geography of the area, the demographics, and SOPs to be put in place with regard to major disasters like floods and other natural calamities.
