Cyclone Michaung: Andhra CM Reviews Relief Efforts, Camps Set To House Over 60,000 People As Landfall Underway

Andhra CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has reviewed the relief efforts amid the cyclone Michaung landfall along the Bapatla coast.

Cyclone Michaung: Severe cyclonic storm Michaung has made landfall and is likely to complete during the next two, as stated by the India Meteorological Department. It will cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast close to Bapatla during the next two hours as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph. The weatherman has also issued a red alert for coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and an Orange alert for Odisha. Earlier, a warning for heavy rain in five states -- Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana -- was issued by the Met department.

Flash flood-like situation is likely to arise in several areas -- guntur, Prakasam, Krishna, West Godavri, Kurnool and Nellore.

Preparations To Tackle Cyclone Michaung

• As Andhra battles the effects of Cyclone Michaung, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy virtually reviewed the relief programmes in affected areas with the respective district officials. He has also directed them to restore the electricity supply on a war footing manner and provide compensation within 48 hours in case of loss of people and livestock.


• The state government has released a relief amount of Rs 22 crore for immediate action and senior IAS officers have been sent to eight districts. Around 52 rehabilitation centers have been prepared in Anakapalli districts and arrangements have been made to accommodate over 60,000 people.


• Around one lakh tonnes of grain has been purchased while action has been taken to prevent 4 lakh tonnes of grain from getting wet. Meanwhile, in view of the prevailing situation, a holiday has been declared for schools across the Eluru district.


• The Electricity Department has set up a toll-free number 9440902926 in Eluru. Financial aid ranging from Rs 1000 to Rs 2500 has been allotted for camp evacuees while the compensation for house collapse or damage has been increased from Rs 8000 to Rs 10,000.

 

Post Landfall Outlook

The IMD bulletin said that after the landfall, cyclone will weaken gradually, and will maintain the intensity of a cyclonic storm for
about 12 hours. It added that the wind speed will gradually decrease to 75-85 kmph gusting to 95 kmph by Tuesday (Dec 5) evening and further gradually decrease becoming 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph by Tuesday midnight.
