New Delhi: The internal strife inside the Congress party has come out in the open even as the key Congress Working Committee CWC remains underway. A clear cut tumult between the party’s old guard versus new was witnessed as a Twitter war was taking place simultaneously between the leaders who wrote the letter against the leadership and those who stood by the leadership.

During the meeting today, former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Monday targeted the party dissenters and questioned the timing of the letter which was sent to interim chief Sonia Gandhi seeking leadership change. He alleged

He said the letter (to Sonia Gandhi about party leadership) was written at a time when Congress government in Rajasthan was facing a crisis, the right place to discuss what was written in the letter was CWC meeting and not the media.

Tearing into them, Rahul Gandhi also alleged that the letter written by the 23 leaders was done in collusion with BJP, as per news agency ANI.

Sibal, Azad hit out at Rahul Gandhi over "collusion with BJP" remark; Rahul refutes statement

Former union minister Kapil Sibal had posted a tweet rebutting Rahul Gandhi at the "collusion with BJP" remark, but later deleted the tweet after Rahul Gandhi made personal clarification to him.

"Was informed by Rahul Gandhi personally that he never said what was attributed to him . I therefore withdraw my tweet," Sibal said.

Soon after Rahul’s alleged "collusion with BJP" remark, Kapil Sibal took to Twitter and reminded of the times he defended the party. Sibal tweeted: “Rahul Gandhi says ‘we are colluding with BJP’...Last 30 years have never made a statement in favour of BJP on any issue. Yet ‘we are colluding with the BJP’.” He later deleted the tweet, in a reconciliation effort from both sides.

Ghulam Nabi Azad had also expressed anger at Rahul Gandhi’s remark and said he will resign if Rahul Gandhi's "collusion with BJP" remark can be proven, sources in the meet said.

Divya Spandana alleged the dissenting leaders of leaking internal details to the media. “Not only did they leak the letter to the media, they continue to feed/leak minute to minute conversations of the CWC meeting that's going on right now to the media. Amazing!” she tweeted.

Reacting to Sibal’s tweet she said: “I think Rahul ji made a mistake. He should have said colluding with the BJP & the media.”

Sonia offered to quit as meeting began

The infighting has now taken an ugly form. As the CWC meeting took off earlier, Sonia Gandhi offered to step down from the party's top post but it was rejected by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as he asked her to continue.

The letter of Sonia Gandhi to the people who wrote to her demanding a change in the leadership, said that she wanted to be relieved. She asked the party to begin deliberation to start a process of transition to relieve her from the duty.

Her letter was read out loud by party General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal at the meeting, wherein she offered to quit and said the process should be initiated to elect a new Congress President.
