New Delhi: The landlocked state has been experiencing severe hardship in supply of essential items since November 1 after United Naga Council (UNC) imposed an indefinite economic blockade on the two national highways, NH-2 (Imphal-Dimapur) and NH 37 (Imphal-Jiribam) that serve as lifeline for the state.


The blockade was imposed following the state government's announcement of formation of seven new districts, four of which have been formally inaugurated.

December 15

  • The tension in the state heightened after a Manipur Police commando and two police constables were killed while nine others were injured when militants ambushed road opening parties (ROP) at two different places in Chandel district of Manipur.

  • The twin attacks took place as United Naga Council (UNC) was gearing up for a mass rally in four Naga district headquarters today against the creation of the seven districts in the state by the O Ibobi Singh-led government.

  • The first ambush occurred at Lokchao, 21 km from the border town of Moreh, when the police team was heading for Tengnoupal where Chief Minister was scheduled to attend a programme in connection with the inauguration of the newly created Tengnoupal district, which was carved out of the existing Naga-dominated Chandel district.


December 16

  • An organisation of women vendors brought out a rally and called for a 24-hour Manipur bandh from 7 PM this evening to protest against the killing of three policemen in Chandel district yesterday.

  • A series of powerful explosions rocked Imphal city within a time span of an hour on the night of December 16, police said.

  • No casualties were reported in the explosions that took place in a gap of about 20 minutes at 8 PM yesterday.

  • The first IED explosion took place at the residence of a special contractor, Shangreihan Muivah, in the highly congested Fairyland area of Nagaram in the heart of capital city at around 8 PM yesterday.Window panes and some other portions of the residence were shattered in the explosion.

  • Another IED exploded at the residence of 58-year-old Mingyao Ruivanao during which portions of his house was damaged. Police said, the second explosion that left a crater of around 10 feet, occurred 20 minutes later after the first explosion.

  • Meanwhile, unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade at the residence of retired Survey Officer RB Reishinsham. The grenade exploded, 20 minutes later after the second blast but did not damage any standing structures, a police officer said.


December 17

  • In an attack on security forces in Manipur, militants attacked a small post of India Reserve Battalion (IRB) at Nungkao in Tamenglong district and took away nine sophisticated arms and ammunition, police said.

  • Normal life crippled in Manipur due to 24-hour statewide bandh called by women vendors of Khwairamband Bazaar against the ambush allegedly by NSCN (IM).

  • Women in several districts of the state took to the streets and blocked the vehicular movement in their protest against NSCN (IM) who allegedly killed three Manipur police personnel and injured eight others, a police official said.

  • Taking serious note on the prevailing situation following three blasts on December 16, the state Cabinet decided to shut down Internet service in Imphal West district with immediate effect.


December 18

  • Curfew was imposed in certain parts of Imphal East district of Manipur in view of continued violence in the region following the triple blasts.

  • In the wake of heightened tension and violence, parts of Manipur capital Imphal were today brought under indefinite curfew and mobile internet services were snapped at various places to prevent spread of rumours over an alleged attack on a church.

  • A mob also vandalised 22 vehicles on Imphal-Ukhrul Road on December 18.

  • Violence spread to Senapati district of Manipur with two vehicles being torched even as indefinite curfew remained in force in Imphal East district and mobile data services suspended. However, curfew was lifted from Imphal West district early this morning.

December 20

  • The Naga Students Federation (NSF) decided to impose a "total blockade" on all Manipur-bound vehicles, including passenger and goods carriers, in all Naga-inhabited areas till the Manipur government gave its assurance to Naga people about their safety and security in that state.

  • A lethode bomb was today detonated by unidentified miscreants at the Moreh Manipur Police Commando complex but no casualties were reported, police said.
