Jammu: In the largest single day spike ever in novel coronavirus cases, Jammu and Kashmir reported 162 fresh cases of COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, taking the overall tally of the patients to 1,921.


For the last two days, more people have tested positive in Jammu division than in the valley. According to officials, Jammu division reported as many as 38 new cases while at least 124 were identified in the Kashmir division.

In Jammu division, they said, Reasi, Kathua and Samba reported 3 cases each while Ramban reported only one. Udhampur and Poonch saw a spike in cases as both areas reported 11 cases while Jammu saw 4 patients and Rajouri 2.

Briefing further on the numbers, sources told that Anantnag reported 4 cases, Kupwara 26, Kulgam 27 and Bandipora 2. Moreover, 10 were reported in Baramulla, 2 in Budgam, 12 in Shopian and  at least 21 cases in Pulwama.

Official further said that of these newly reported patients, 73 were confirmed at microbiology laboratory of CD hospital, 39 in SKIMS Soura while 38 in Jammu.

Remaining cases have come from private laboratories. However, there could be a possibility of repeated cases. That would be divulged shortly, officials told reporters.

Yesterday, the Union Territory had reported 91 new cases and two death. With two patients succumbing on Wednesday, 26 people have been killed by the contagious coronavirus in Jammu and Kashmir so far. 854 patients have completely recovered and the number of active cases is 1,041 in J&K out of whom 288 are in Jammu division and 753 are in Kashmir division.

However, it is to be remarked that Jammu & Kashmir is leading all states in the country in terms of conducting COVID-19 tests.

J&K government spokesman Rohit Kansal, in a press conference on Monday had told media that J&K is testing over 10,000 people per million, thereby becoming number one in the country.
