Karnataka on Saturday reported 201 fresh cases of Covid-19 and one new coronavirus-related death in the past 24 hours. This takes the total number of active cases in the state to 833, a health department bulletin said. The total number of Covid-19 related deaths in the state after the recent spike has touched more than 10.
With Odisha reporting 14 new COVID-19 cases this month, the state government has asked all government-run medical colleges and chief district medical officers to increase surveillance, testing and preparedness for potential surge of the virus, PTI reported.

Seven new fatalities -- three from Kerala, two from Karnataka and one each from Chhattisgarh and Tamil Nadu -- were reported in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am, as reported by PTI.
As Delhi prepares to ring in the New Year amid fears of the new COVID sub-variant JN.1, specialists warned persons with comorbidities and the elderly to avoid crowded areas and wear masks, while claiming that no public health measures were required just now. There are 45 current Covid cases in Delhi, according to statistics from the Union Health Ministry. The national capital has recorded one instance of the JN.1 strain so far.
Delayed disposal of cases amounts to denial of justice to litigants, former Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul said on Friday, while voicing concern over fewer judges than required.
In an interview with PTI, Justice Kaul, who demitted office on December 25, said there should not be any hesitation in experimenting with new ideas to deal with the huge backlog of cases from trial courts to the Supreme Court.
The number of cases pending in various courts in the country has crossed the five crore mark, the government had told the Rajya Sabha on July 20.
"As per data retrieved from the Integrated Case Management System (ICMIS) by the Supreme Court of India, as on July 1, there are 69,766 cases pending in the Supreme Court.
"Total number of cases pending in the high courts and the district and subordinate courts as on July 14 are 60,62,953 and 4,41,35,357 respectively, as per information made available on National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG)," Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal had said in the upper house. (PTI)
Karnataka reported 173 new Covid-19 cases and two coronavirus-related fatalities in the previous 24 hours on Friday. According to the health bulletin, this brings the total number of active cases in the state to 702. With this, the overall number of Covid-19-related deaths in the state since the current rise in instances exceeds ten, according to the report.
As many as 129 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in Maharashtra on Friday, the health department said.
The number of patients infected with the JN.1 variant remains at 10.
According to the Public Health Department of Maharashtra, 80,23,487 COVID-19 patients have been discharged after full recovery.
The recovery rate in the state is 98.18 per cent, while the case fatality rate in the state is 1.81 per cent. Out of 8,76,06,207 laboratory samples, 81,72,533 have tested positive (9.33 per cent) for COVID-19 until today. (ANI)
On JN.1 COVID variant, Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Former DG, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) says, "It belongs to the same Omicron family, but because it has certain mutations, which makes it more transmissible, more infectious. So it's been classified as a variant of interest by the WHO. However, till now, the public health risk is still low in the sense that because we all have immunity now because of the vaccines and the natural infections, we've had in the past, and that immunity still seems to be quite strong. It's still protecting most of us from getting severely ill. What we are seeing now is a surge of infections and because the testing has been stepped up in the recent few days, as well as the genomics surveillance, the more we test, the more we are going to detect, and also we're going to find more JN 1. variant in the country..."
India has logged 145 cases of Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 till December 28, news agency ANI reported citing official sources. The samples were collected between November 21 and December 18. Of the total cases, highest number of infections, with 41 JN.1 cases were reported from Kerala. However, majority of these patients are on isolation at home, the official sources told the news agency.
A total of 145 cases of the JN.1 sub-variant of Covid-19 were reported till 28th December, reported news agency ANI while citing sources. These samples were collected between 21 November and 18th December 2023.

Covid-19 cases have seen a recent surge in the country, with infections being reported from various states since the emergence of the Omicron sub-variant JN.1. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has classified JN.1 as a distinct "variant of interest (VoI)," a shift from its previous designation under the A.2.86 sub-lineages.
Amid the uptick in cases, Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj visited the LNJP Hospital on Thursday to take stock of its preparedness for Covid-19 and asserted that the facility is fully geared to deal with any exigencies.
"Following the oxygen shortage that was seen during the Covid wave in Delhi and across the country, the hospital now has piped oxygen supply through a centralised system," he said.
Asked if the Delhi government is planning to reserve any beds for Covid patients, the minister said only four people are currently hospitalised with the infection in the city.
Meanwhile, a total of 157 cases of Covid-19 sub-variant JN.1 have been detected in the country, with Kerala reporting the highest number of 78, followed by Gujarat at 34, according to the INSACOG's data updated on Thursday.
Nine states and Union territories have so far detected the presence of the JN.1 sub-variant of the virus.
These states are -- Kerala (78), Gujarat (34), Goa (18), Karnataka (eight), Maharashtra (seven), Rajasthan (five), Tamil Nadu (four), Telangana (two) and Delhi (one), according to the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). The INSACOG's data showed 141 Covid cases recorded in the country in December had the presence of JN.1, while 16 such cases were detected in November.
