India has been recording a steady surge in the infection of Covid-19 with a single day rise of 774 cases recorded on Saturday, taking the number of active cases to 4,187, as per the data by Union health ministry. Two deaths, one each from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, were also logged in a span of 24 hours, the data published by health ministry stated.

However, the current rise of infections majorly has mild symptoms. Of the 4,187 active cases across the country, over 92 per cent are recovering under home isolation, according to a PTI report.

The number of dailly cases which was in double digits started to increase from December 5 after the emergence of a new COVID-19 variant, JN.1 coinciding with the cold weather conditions. The highest single-day rise was recorded at 841 on December 31, 2023, which was 0.2 per cent of the peak cases reported in May 2021, reported PTI quoting official sources as saying.

"The currently available data suggests that the JN.1 variant is neither leading to an exponential rise in the new cases nor a surge in the hospitalisation and mortality," reported PTI quoting the source.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease since the start of the pandemic in early 2020 is over 4.4 crore with a national recovery rate of 98.81 per cent, according to the ministry's website.

Meanwhile, 619 cases of Covid-19 with the JN.1 sub variant have been reported from 12 states, reported PTI citing official sources.

As per the report, 199 cases have been reported from Karnataka, 148 from Kerala, 110 from Maharashtra, 47 from Goa, 36 from Gujarat, 30 from Andhra Pradesh, 26 from Tamil Nadu, 15 from Delhi, 4 from Rajasthan 2 from Telangana and one each from Odisha and Haryana.

The officials said there is no cause of immediate concern, even though the numbers are rising, as the majority of those infected are opting for home-based treatment, indicating mild illness.
