Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS: West Bengal Reports 10,137 New Covid Cases, Culminative Death Toll Crosses 15,500 Mark

Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS, May 31, Monday: Mucormycosis or Black Fungus which was already raising alarms in the country has now been detected in children. In a first, two children from Karnataka have been found infected with mucormycosis. An explosive new study has found that Chinese scientists created the virus in a lab in Wuhan, then tried to cover their tracks by reverse-engineering versions of the virus to make it look like it evolved naturally from bats.

Kolkata: West Bengal's COVID-19 death toll on Monday crossed the 15,500 mark after 131 more people succumbed to the infection in the last 24 hours, the health department said.

Daily coronavirus cases rose by 10,137 mounting the states overall caseload to 13,76,377.

The overall number of COVID-19 fatalities is 15,541 now, the department said in a bulletin.

As many as 17,856 patients recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours improving the discharge rate to 92.55 per cent.

The overall number of people, who have recuperated from the infection, has gone up to 12,73,788.

Currently, the number of active cases stands at 87,048.

North 24 Parganas accounted for 33 deaths while Kolkata registered 28 coronavirus fatalities. The rest of the deaths were reported from several other districts, including 10 from South 24 Parganas.

The new positive cases included 2,376 from North 24 Parganas district and 1,324 from Kolkata, the bulletin said.

Since Sunday, 58,843 samples were tested for coronavirus in the state taking the total number of such examinations to 1,24,30,977. (PTI)
Over 21.58 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccine administered in India so far

New Delhi: The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has crossed 21.58 crore, the Union health ministry said on Monday.


It said that 12,23,596 people in the age group of 18-44 years received their first dose and 13,402 their second dose of Covid vaccine on Monday.


Cumulatively, 2,02,10,889 people across the country have received their first dose and 23,491 their second dose since the start of phase three of the vaccination drive, the ministry said.


Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal have administered more than 10 lakh beneficiaries in the age group of 18-44 years their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, it said.


The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country has reached 21,58,18,547, according to the 7 pm provisional report for today, the ministry said.


The total of 21,58,18,547 includes 98,83,778 healthcare workers (HCWs) who have taken their first dose and 67,87,633 HCWs who have taken their second dose, and 1,56,67,311 frontline workers (FLWs) who have received their first dose and 85,21,965 FLWs who have taken their second dose.


The ministry said 2,02,10,889 people in the 18-44 years age group have received their first dose and 23,491 their second dose.


Besides them, 6,64,02,012 and 1,07,15,693 beneficiaries in the 45-60 years age group have taken their first dose and second dose, respectively, while 5,88,31,736 and 1,87,74,039 beneficiaries above the age of 60 years have received their first dose and second dose, respectively.


The ministry said that as on day-136 of the vaccination drive, a total 25,52,501 vaccine doses were given.


It said 22,75,324 beneficiaries got their first dose and 2,77,177 their second dose, according to the provisional report till 7 pm.


Final reports would be completed for the day by late night, the ministry said.


The vaccination exercise as a tool to protect the most vulnerable population groups in the country from COVID-19 continues to be regularly reviewed and monitored at the highest level, it said. (PTI)

Rajasthan eases lockdown restrictions

Jaipur: As the declining trend in COVID-19 cases continued, the Rajasthan government on Monday issued guidelines to start the "unlock" process by easing certain restrictions from June 2.


According to the guidelines for the modified lockdown, exemption for various activities will be given only in areas where the positivity rate is less than 10 percent or the use of oxygen, ICU, and ventilator beds is less than 60 percent.


All government offices of the state will open from 9:30 AM to 4 PM with the presence of 25 percent employees till June 7, and after that with 50 percent employees.


At the same time, private offices can be opened up to 2 PM with the presence of 25 percent employees.


Intra-district movement of private vehicles will be allowed from 5 AM to 12 noon from Tuesday to Friday. After June 8, traffic will be allowed in the entire state from 5 AM to 12 noon.


The weekend curfew will remain in force every Friday afternoon from 12 noon to 5 AM Tuesday till the number of active cases in the state reduces to 10,000.


"Public discipline curfew" will continue the rest of the days from 12 noon to 5 AM the next day. (PTI)

Total availability of vaccines to increase further, nearly 12 cr doses to be given to States: Health Ministry

To accelerate the pace of vaccination even further, the total availability of vaccines will increase further in June 2021; nearly 12 crore doses will be available to States and UTs in June 2021, enabling them to ramp up vaccination numbers: Ministry of Health.


The Centre will provide the states and UTs with the available buffer stock to urgently replenish their depleting stocks so that the vaccination drive carries on at a steady pace, the ministry added.

Walk-in vaccination facility launched in Delhi for mediapersons, families

New Delhi: The Delhi Government on Monday started a walk-in vaccination drive for mediapersons and their families free of cost at Sarvodaya Bal Vidyalaya, DDU Marg, ITO.


As per an official statement, the Delhi government said: Mediapersons, along with their families of age groups - 18-45 years and 45 + years can reach the venue for vaccination.


While inaugurating a vaccination centre at DDU Marg, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed to journalists to get themselves and their families vaccinated at the centre.


Kejriwal also said that procurement, production, and distribution of the vaccines is the responsibility of the central government and administering the vaccines to the people is the responsibility of the state governments.


Addressing the media, Kejriwal said, "This vaccination centre (at DDU Marg) has been especially started to vaccinate journalists and their families. I am happy that this facility has been launched and the demands of the journalists have been met. This facility will vaccinate journalists and their families of both age groups, 18-45 years and more than 45 years."


"We will rectify whatever issues the people are facing. I observed that the portal was facing some issues today. We are working towards resolving those and all the other issues based on the feedback of the people," he added.

20 new cases push COVID-19 tally of Andamans to 6,984
The COVID-19 caseload in Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 6,984 as 20 more people tested positive for the disease in the Union Territory, a health department official said on Monday.

 

Two new patients have travel history and others were detected during contact tracing, he said.

 

The death toll rose to 114 as one more fatality due to the infection was reported in the last 24 hours, the official said.

 

At least 23 people were cured of the disease during the period, taking the total number of recoveries in the archipelago to 6,683.

India Reports lowest daily cases in 50 days

India reported the lowest daily new coronavirus infections in 50 days with 1,52,734 cases, taking India's total tally to 2,80,47,534, while the active caseload further declined to 20,26,092, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Monday.

The death toll climbed to 3,29,100 with 3,128 daily deaths, the data updated at 8 am showed.

Recoveries continued to outnumber the daily new cases for the 18th consecutive day.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 2,56,92,342, with 2,38,022 patients having recovered in a span of 24 hours, while the case fatality rate stands at 1.17 per cent, the data stated.

Also, 16,83,135 tests were conducted on Sunday, taking the total cumulative tests conducted so far in the country to 34,48,66,883, while the daily positivity was recorded at 9.07 per cent . It has been less than 10 per cent for seven consecutive days, the ministry said.

Hyderabad Metro to operate between 7 am and 12:45 pm in view of lockdown
In view of the further extension of lockdown declared by the Telangana government, Hyderabad Metro Rail service will operate its trains between 7 am and 12:45 pm.

 

"In view of the further extension of lockdown declared by the Government of Telangana, the timings of the Hyderabad Metro Rail service have been rescheduled. During this period, Hyderabad Metro Rail will start its first train from respective terminal stations at 7 am; while the last train will start at 11:45 am and reach the respective terminating stations by 12:45 pm," read a statement from Hyderabad Metro Rail.

 

"For everyone''s safety, passengers are also advised to strictly follow the COVID-19 safety guidelines, including social distancing, wearing of face masks, regular hand sanitisation and thermal screening, among others," it added.

South Africa strengthens COVID-19 restrictions; expert says measures 'inadequate' to stop third wave

 South Africa on Sunday announced that it would strengthen the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions up a level to curb the exponential growth in the deadly viral infection, but a leading expert said the action is not enough to stop the third wave of the pandemic from hitting the country.

The total coronavirus cases in South Africa jumped to 1,659,070 with the detection of 4,515 new infections in the last 24 hours, while 70 more fatalities due to the disease pushed the death toll to 56,363.

In an address to the nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in the country will move up a level from Monday.

Citing gatherings as the biggest spreader of the virus, he said all gatherings, including religious, social, political and cultural will be restricted to a maximum of 100 people indoors and 250 outdoors.

Black Fungus cases now detected in children

The mucormycosis infection, commonly known as black fungus, has now been detected in children. This is first such case reported in the country, two children from Karnataka have been found infected with mucormycosis.


An 11-year-old girl from Ballari district and a 14-year-old boy from Chitradurga district have been infected with the fungal disease, both children of farm labourers, are set to lose one eye to the infection.


"Two children are undergoing treatment for black fungus infection at Government Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospitals. They are suffering from Acute Juvenile Diabetes (AJD)," a senior health official told PTI.


They had contracted COVID-19 but were not aware of it, a health official said adding they were admitted to the hospital after they developed complications.
