Covid tally crosses 25-lakh in Karnataka; deaths 476

Ranking after Maharashtra on the pandemic tracker, Karnataka's Covid tally crossed the 25-lakh mark, with 24,214 new cases in a day, while 476 succumbed to the infection, said the state health bulletin on Thursday.

"With 24,214 new cases registered on Wednesday, the state's Covid tally shot up to 25,23,998, including 4,02,203 active cases, while 20,94,369 patients recovered so far, with 31,459 discharged during the day," said the bulletin.

As epi-centre of the pandemic in the state, Bengaluru reported 5,949 fresh cases on Wednesday, taking its Covid tally to 11,43,878, including 2,06,390 active cases, while recoveries rose to 9,25,066, with 6,643 discharged in the last 24 hours.

The virus has claimed 476 lives, including 273 in Bengaluru during the day, taking the state's death toll to 27,405 and the city's toll to 12,421 since the pandemic broke out in mid-March a year ago.

Bengal logs lower new COVID-19 cases

West Bengal continued to record a declining trend of fresh COVID-19 cases on Thursday as it recorded 13,046 new infections, raising the tally to 13,31,249, a health department bulletin said.

The death toll mounted to 14,975 after 148 more fatalities were reported from different parts of the state, it said.

West Bengal now has 1,17,154 active cases, while 11,99,120 patients have recovered from the disease, including 19,121 since Wednesday.

A total of 1,21,79,113 samples have so far been tested for COVID-19, taking into account 57,165 clinical examinations in the last 24 hours, the bulletin said.

Meanwhile, 1,66,573 people were vaccinated in the state during the day, officials said.

5 more cases of Black fungus reported in West bengal

West Bengal on Thursday reported five new cases of mucormycosis or black fungus infection, taking the total number of such cases in the state to 18, a health department official said.
Two of the affected persons are from Bihar and Assam and they are being treated in separate hospitals in the state.


The other cases were reported from Purba Bardhaman and Bankura districts, the official said.


There was no report of any death due to black fungus infection in the state during the day, he said, adding that till Thursday, West Bengal has reported three deaths caused by the disease.

Global supply of COVAX hit due to coronavirus crisis in India, USAID tells lawmakers

Due to the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis in India, the global supply of COVAX has been badly hit, so much so that there are many parts of the world where one shot has been dispensed to health workers or frontline workers and the second shot has not been forthcoming, a top Biden administration official told lawmakers on Thursday.

"COVAX has suffered a big blow given the scale of the pandemic in India," Samantha Power, Administrator of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), told members of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations for a hearing on the Fiscal 2022 Budget Request for the USAID.

"The Serum Institute of India, which had planned to supply upwards of 140 million doses by the end of June, has had to pull back that supply because of the domestic emergency," Power said responding to a question on the vaccine crisis that has been created across the globe due to the scale of the pandemic in India.

Over 100 Inflammatory Syndrome Cases Among Children In North India As Post-Covid Reaction

More than 100 cases of multi-organ inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) have been reported in northern India in the last five days as post-Covid reaction, Indian Academy of Pediatric Intensive Care said citing its data.


According to the academy, the sudden spurt in MIS-C cases has been observed typically in post-Covid patients mostly between 4 to 18 years. However, there are rare cases of MIS-C affecting babies six months old.

But she stressed that vaccination would not be compulsory and would have no bearing on whether children can attend school or go on holiday.


The European Medicines Agency is expected to approve the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid jab for 12- to 15-year-olds on Friday. It is already authorised in the EU for those over 16.
