Coronavirus HIGHLIGHTS, Friday, June 18, 2021: With 62,480 new coronavirus infections being reported in a day, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 2,97,62,793, while the death toll climbed to 3,83,490 with 1,587 fresh fatalities, the lowest in 61 days, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Friday. The active cases have fallen below 8 lakh after 73 days and the national COVID-19 recovery rate has crossed 96 per cent. Over 5,000 children under the age of 14 in Meghalaya have tested Covid-19 positive and 17 of them died, health officials said on Thursday.

Don't Overcharge Covid-19 Patients, Maha Deputy CM Warns Hospitals

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Friday said the state government had fixed COVID-19 treatment rates for cities, districts and tehsils and warned hospitals against charging higher than what has been stipulated.


Addressing a press conference here, Pawar said the state government has appointed auditors to verify hospital bills amid the pandemic.

Kerala Logs 11,361 New Covid-19 Cases, 90 Deaths

Kerala on Friday reported 11,361 new coronavirus cases and 90 more deaths, taking the caseload to 27,85,304 and the death toll to 11,833. A total of 12,147 persons recuperated from the disease, taking the number of those cured to 26,65,354.

UK Records Highest Single Day Surge Even As 8 In 10 Have Taken The Covid Jab

The Covid cases in the UK continue to surge even after 8 out of 10 adults have taken the first dose of Covid jab.  The UK recorded the most coronavirus cases in a day since mid-February, amid warnings the current wave of infections driven by the highly transmissible delta variant may still be weeks from peaking.




More than 11,000 new cases of the disease were reported on Thursday, along with 19 deaths, according to the Department Health. A study by Public Health England showed infection rates increasing across all age groups, but are highest among people aged 20 to 29.


 


Jharkhand on high alert over possible third wave of COVID-19

The Jharkhand government is on high alert to contain any possible third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, following suggestions of experts that any laxity may lead to serious consequences, officials said on Friday.

The state government issued a detailed document to deal with the possibility of the third wave, which may lead to an increased number of infections among children.

"Experts suggest that the Coronavirus is mutating at a fast pace and any kind of lethargy may lead to serious complications. With the inputs received from the experts, the state government of Jharkhand is on high alert regarding this matter. Efforts are being undertaken to enhance and up-grade the existing medical infrastructure," an offficial statement said.

Claiming that the dedication and commitment of the Hemant Soren government have resulted in containing the second wave, it said that with few restrictions in place, the state is moving towards lifting all the curbs.

To deal with the expected third wave, the state government has started preparing its machinery in advance, it said.

"Experts anticipate that in the third wave children are at greater risk whereas, this does not give any guarantee of adults being unaffected. The government is also working on generating awareness among people. Along with the preparedness of the government to deal with this potential threat, parents are also expected to discharge their responsibilities," the statement said.

Active Cases Below 200 in Noida, Ghaziabad

 Gautam Buddh Nagar recorded 14 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday while Ghaziabad had 18 along with one death, as the number of active patients also reached below 200 in both the districts, official data showed. With this, the overall number of positive cases reached 62,993 in Gautam Buddh Nagar and 55,486 in Ghaziabad, according to Uttar Pradesh's Health Department data for a 24-hour period. The death toll reached 460 in Ghaziabad with one more fatality while it stood at 466 in Gautam Buddh Nagar, the data showed.

Bengal Reports 3,018 New Cases, 64 Deaths

West Bengal's COVID-19 tally rose to 14,74,249 on Thursday as 3,018 more people tested positive for the infection, while 64 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 17,182, a health bulletin said. As many as 2,033 more people have been cured of the disease, taking the recovery rate among the coronavirus patients in the state to 97.34 per cent.

New Covid infections drop, daily deaths dive below 1K

For the first time since June 9, Maharashtra's Covid-19 deaths dived below the 1K-mark, even as new infections dropped under the 10K-level, as the number of patients cured increased, health officials said here on Thursday.

Compared with 1,236 deaths declared on Wednesday, the state has revealed a lower figure of 636 fatalities on Thursday, (comprising 263 new deaths, and 400 earlier deaths), much lower than the peak 2,771 (June 13) - and the toll shot up from 115,390 to 116,026 now, the worst in the country.

The number of fresh cases again fell below the 10K-level, and decreased from 10,107 on Wednesday to 9,830 on Thursday, compared with the record peak of 68,631 (April 18), and the tally zoomed from 59,34,880 to 59,44,710 now.

In Mumbai, for the 21st consecutive day, the new infections remained below the 1K-level, and fell from 821 a day earlier to 660 today - and the city tally went up from 717,172 to 717,832 till date, after touching the highest daily spike of 11,206 cases (April 4).

The daily deaths increased from 11 a day earlier to 20 today, and the total fatalities in the country's commercial capital went up from 15,227 on Wednesday to 15,247 on Thursday - the highest in India.

Covid positivity rate drops to 3% in J&K's Baramulla district

The Covid-19 positivity rate in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir has dropped to mere 3 per cent whereas recovery rate has increased to 95 per cent.

Deputy Commissioner (DC) Baramulla, Bhupinder Kumar said this on Thursday while briefing about the status of Covid-19 pandemic and the required measures taken by the administration in the district.

Informing about the slew of the measures taken to control the spread of virus, the DC said that focus will now remain on disease prevention by augmenting futuristic capabilities.

He said that Oxygen capacity is being enhanced throughout the district and recently 1,000 LPM Oxygen plant has been commissioned in GMC Baramulla.

The DC further added that various initiatives have been taken to fully equip health institutions. He said that three Oxygen plants in Tangmarg, Uri and Kreeri were approved and the work on them is going on with accelerated pace.

Over 5,000 children test Covid positive in Meghalaya, 17 die

Over 5,000 children under the age of 14 in Meghalaya have tested Covid-19 positive and 17 of them died, health officials said on Thursday.

Health officials said that since the beginning of the pandemic last year, 5,101 children up to the age of 14 tested positive but 4,344 of them have recovered and 17 succumbed. The remaining are under treatment in various hospitals.

Majority of the children were infected during the past one month.

"As many as 2,950 children have tested positive for Covid-19 since May 15, out of whom 2,821 have recovered, while 13 children died during the same period," an official said.

The latest child death was reported in East Garo Hills district where a four-year-old girl succumbed to the dreaded disease earlier this month.

Vietnam reports 515 new cases

Vietnam reported 515 new Covid-19 infections on Thursday, the highest daily increase since the pandemic hit the country last year, according to its Ministry of Health.

Health officials said that since the beginning of the pandemic last year, 5,101 children up to the age of 14 tested positive but 4,344 of them have recovered and 17 succumbed. The remaining are under treatment in various hospitals. Majority of the children were infected during the past one month.

"As many as 2,950 children have tested positive for Covid-19 since May 15, out of whom 2,821 have recovered, while 13 children died during the same period," an official said. The latest child death was reported in East Garo Hills district where a four-year-old girl succumbed to the dreaded disease earlier this month.

Briefing the media, Health and Family Welfare Minister Alexander Laloo Hek said that not a single newborn baby was affected by infectious disease so far in the state.

With 10,685 patients discharged during the day, recoveries from Covid crossed the 26-lakh mark in Karnataka, while 138 died due to the virus, said the state health bulletin on Thursday.



"Recoveries shot up to 26,10,157, with 10,685 patients discharged across the state in the last 24 hours, while 5,983 positive cases on Wednesday increased Covid tally to 27,90,338, including 1,46,726 active cases," said the bulletin.

As epi-centre of the pandemic in the state, Bengaluru, however, reported only 1,209 fresh cases, taking its Covid tally to 12,01,963, including 78,943 active cases, while recoveries rose to 11,07,648, with 1,510 discharged in the day.
