New Delhi: With India entering lockdown 4.0 the country is witnessing a sharp spike in the coronavirus infected cases. The number of infected cases in the country surged to past 1 lakh with 4970 new cases in the past 24 hours. According to The Health Ministry,  the number of active cases in India jumped to 58,302, while 3,163 people have died so far.In the past 24 hours, 134 people lost there battle to the pandemic.


On the positive side, the number of recoveries also rose to 39, 174 with 2,340 recoveries in the past 24 hours.

India is the latest entrant to the club of nations with more than one lakh cases—U.S. leading with over 15 lakh cases, followed by Russia with more than 2.9 lakh cases. Brazil’s cases topped U.K.’s today, taking the third position with more than 2.5 lakh cases.

The highest jump in the active cases was recorded in Maharashtra as the cases climbed to 35,058, followed by Gujarat which has 11,745 cases and Tamil Nadu 11,760 cases so far.

Maharashtra also reported highest number of deaths at 1,249, followed by 694 in Gujarat. The spike in numbers is worrisome for the authorities as several states have announced easing of lockdown guidelines.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a lockdown in India from March 25 when the country had less than 1,000 cases. Despite strict rules and constant guidelines from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Health Ministry, state governments and bodies, it now ranks 11th on the list of countries with the highest cases. The spike in numbers is worrisome for the authorities as several states have announced easing of lockdown guidelines.

India’s pace, though slower when compared to the countries above, has quickened drastically. The first 10,000 cases were reported over more than two months while the most recent 10,000 cases took merely two days.

As of April 14 - the day total India cases crossed the 10,000-mark - authorities had conducted little less than 2.5 lakh tests. In comparison, 75,150 tests were carried out just on May 18. Therefore, the surge in cases can also be attributed to the increased testing capacity.

According to the World data, India has surpassed  1 lakh infected cases after 110 days , while Turkey crossed the 1 lakh mark in 44 days , Italy reached in 60 days, Spain in 61 days. and USA took 67 days to reach the 1 lakh mark.

India's recovery rate is 39% at 1 lakh cases while the recovery rate for other countries stands as Italy at 14%, Spain at 22%, Iran at 80% and and USA at 2%

Globally, 4,891,330 people have been infected by coronavirus so far, and the total number of deaths from the disease now stands at 320,121, according to Worldometer
