New Delhi: The Congress party has announced a nationwide protest on Monday against the Hindu Mahasabha members who performed an objectionable act of shooting the effigy of Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary on January 30.

The protest is slated to begin at 10 am on Monday at Rajghat, where the memorial dedicated to Mahatma is situated.

As per sources, Congress president Rahul Gandhi is also expected to take part in the protest.

Other than Rajghat, Congress leaders are also expected to stage demonstrations near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the premises of Parliament.

Congress leaders of different states will be leading protests in their respective states.

The protest comes as a response to an incident that took place on Mahatma Gandhi’s 71st death anniversary on January 30 in Aligarh, where a woman leader of the All India Hindu Mahasabha, Pooja Shakun Pandey, along with other workers, fired bullets at an effigy of Mahatma Gandhi with an air pistol.

Three persons were arrested in connection with the gun firing. The police on Wednesday had registered a case against 13 persons, including the woman leader of Hindu Mahasabha in connection with the act.

The incident took place in a house in Naurangabad locality of the city. Later, the video of the event went viral on social media.  After the video went viral, a case was registered against 13 persons associated with Hindu Mahasabha including Pooja Shakun Pandey. They also allegedly garlanded the statue of Nathuram Godse on Jan 30 in UP.
