New Delhi: The headless Congress suffered a fresh jolt on Monday as its Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Sinh tendered his resignation from the House and the party. Sinh has close links with the Gandhi family and held numerous senior posts including Union Minister for Communications in 1991 while the Congress was in power in Uttar Pradesh and the Centre. Singh, who belongs to the Royal family of Amethi, was first in Congress, then shifted to Janta Dal, later moved to BJP and then returned to Congress.
Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu accepted resignation of Sinh who was a Congress member of the Rajya Sabha from Assam.
Addressing a press conference this afternoon Sinh said he will join the BJP on Wednesday.
Hitting out at the Congress party’s ‘rudderless leadership’, Sinh said “there’s communication gap in the party and is still living in the past.”
Sinh lavished praised on PM Narendra Modi saying “the nation stands with PM Modi and so am I. Under his leadership, the country will fulfill all its dreams.”
In the UP state elections in 2017, the BJP had fielded his first wife Garima Sinh against his present wife Ameeta from Amethi assembly seat. Garima emerged victorious and BJP officially made inroads into Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha constituency.
Sanjay Sinh managed to win only 41,681 votes or 4.17% votes in the 2019 general elections from Sultanpur Lok Sabha constituency. Sinh who was a close friend to late Sanjay Gandhi had BJP’s Maneka Gandhi as his political opponent. She narrowly won the contest defeating Bahujan Samaj Party leader Chandra Bhadra Sinh.
