'India Believes In Merit. You Are Not India': Top Quotes From Smriti Irani's Counter To Rahul Gandhi In Lok Sabha

BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani hit back at the Opposition during the no-confidence motion debate, saying that the Congress should quit India as the country believes in merit.

Union Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday began her speech against the no-confidence motion brought in by the Opposition in Lok Sabha, saying that the Opposition must "quit India". Commenting on the Opposition alliance's nomenclature, she said that these parties were not INDIA as India is against corruption and dynastic politics.

Here are the top quotes from Smriti Irani's speech in Lok Sabha during the no-trust debate:

  • "You are not India, for India is not corrupt. India believes in merit not in dynasty and today of all the days, people like you need to remember what was told to the British - Quit India. Corruption quit India, Dynasty quit India. Merit now finds a place in India."

  • "This is the first time in history that some people in Parliament have clapped on hearing about Mother India's murder. Congress MPs banged the tables [clapped] over Mother's murder."

  • "It was mentioned in the House today that he [Rahul Gandhi] undertook a yatra [Bharat Jodo Yatra] and assured that they will reinstate Article 370 if it is up to them... I would like to tell the person who has run away from the House that neither will Article 370 be reinstated in the country nor will those who threaten Kashmiri Pandits with "Ralib Galib Chalib" be spared."

  • "Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh repeatedly said that the government is ready to debate on the Manipur issue. The Opposition ran away from it, we did not..."

  • "Manipur is an integral part of India. Khandit na tha, na hai aur na kabhi hoga... [It was never divided, nor will it ever be divided.]"

Before Irani, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched a fierce attack on the BJP, saying that it had murdered India in Manipur by fuelling the violence there.
