MUMBAI: In a controversial statement, a Congress legislator from Maharashtra has likened Prime Minister Narendra Modi to a "dengue mosquito". Praniti Shinde, MLA from Solapur city, said a new breed of "dengue mosquito" by the name of "Modi" is causing illness among citizens. She made this statement in a rally earlier this week but it was picked up by the media on Sunday.

“There is a new dengue mosquito in our country, its name is 'Modi baba'. Everybody is being affected because of him. He had a disease of telling lies… brothers and sisters, I will bring down inflation, deposit Rs Lakhs in your accounts," ANI quoted Shinde as saying.

In her speech, she also lambasted the Prime Minister for the increasing price of gas cylinders and said that the situation was much better under the previous Congress government.

The Congress MLA also referred to the local BJP MP Sharad Bansode as a drunkard.

"The BJP leaders have not spent a single penny for the development of this district. What the government has given to our district are two leaders who keep fighting amongst themselves and one drunkard MP," India Today quoted Shinde as saying in a report.
