During the Lok Sabha elections, he had made a comment about people with the surname 'Modi.' A Gujarat MLA filed a defamation case for using the surname 'Modi.'


During an election rally, Rahul Gandhi had made a remark about the surname 'Modi' and said, "All Modis are thieves." Following this, MLA Purnesh Modi filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi under sections 499 and 500 of the IPC in April 2019.
