New Delhi: Congress named former four-time MLA Udai Bhan as the new Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee chief on Wednesday. The decision was announced after the party released a press release stating that interim chief Sonia Gandhi has accepted Kumari Selja’s resignation who served in the position earlier.
“The party appreciates the contribution of outgoing PCC president Kumari Selja,” the release signed by AICC general secretary KC Venugopal said.
The party also appointed four working presidents that are Shruti Choudhry, Ram Kishan Gujjar, Jitender Kumar Bharadwaj, and Suresh Gupta. According to a report by news agency PTI, the changes were made after deliberations with senior party leaders.
Haryana is the second state which is witnessing a revamp after the poll debacle Congress faced in the five state elections.
Post his appointment, Bhan thanked the Congress leadership for posing their faith in him for the assembly elections that are due in 2024. He said, "The entire Congress is united and we will win the forthcoming elections."
Who Is Udai Bhan?
Udai Bhan belongs to the Scheduled Caste community and is a former MLA from Hodal. He is considered to be a close confidant of former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
Bhan has replaced Kumari Selja who is also from the SC community.
He is also the son of veteran leader Gaya Lal who was also an MLA from the Hodal constituency.
Udai Bhan’s appointment as the party chief in Haryana can mean a win-win situation for Congress as the rejig not only solves the infighting in the party’s Haryana unit but also retains the Dalit face of the party as Selja was replaced by another Dalit leader.
