In a major reshuffle, the Supreme Court collegium has recommended the transfer of 23 High Court judges. The Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud-led collegium recommended the transfer of four Punjab and Haryana High Court judges to Allahabad, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan High Court. Justice Arvind Singh Sangwan has been recommended for transfer to Allahabad, Justice Avneesh Jhingan to Gujarat, Justice Raj Mohan Singh to Madhya Pradesh and Justice Arun Monga to Rajasthan, reported the Indian Express.
Justice Vivek Kumar Singh, Justice Prakash Padia, Justice S P Kesarwani and Justice Rajendra Kumar-IV have been recommended for transfer from Allahabad High Court to Madras High Court, Jharkhand, Calcutta and Madhya Pradesh High Court respectively.
Furthermore, according to Live Law, the SC collegium has recommended the transfer of four Gujarat High Court judges to other High Courts. The names are Justice Alpesh Y Kogje, Justice Kumari Gita Gopi, Justice Hemant M Prachchhak and Justice Samir J Dave.
Notably, Justice Prachchhak is the judge who refused to stay the conviction of Rahul Gandhi in the defamation case over his 'Modi Surname' remark. Also, Justice Samir Dave is the one who had recently recused from hearing Teesta Setalvad's plea to quash FIR over alleged riots case evidence fabrication, Live Law mentioned. Justice Gita Gopi had recused from hearing Rahul Gandhi's plea to suspend his conviction.
Justice Alpesh Y Kogje has been recommended to be moved to Allahabad. Justice Kumari Gita Gopi to Madras, Justice Hemant M Prachchhak to Patna and Justice Samir J Dave to Rajasthan, the report added.
From Telangana High Court, Justices G Anupama Chakravarthy, Munnuri Laxman, M Sudheer Kumar and C Sumalatha have been recommended for transfer to Patna, Rajasthan, Madras and Karnataka HCs, respectively, the IE reported.
Notably, in its August 3 meeting, the collegium proposed to transfer Justice M Sudheer Kumar to Calcutta and Justice Sumalatha to Gujarat. But it changed this to Madras and Karnataka respectively after considering their requests.
The collegium also recommended the transfer of Justices Shekhar B Saraf, Lapita Banerji and Bibek Chaudhuri from the Calcutta High Court to Allahabad High Court, Punjab and Haryana HC and Patna High Court respectively.
According to IE, Justices C Manavendranath Roy and Duppala Venkata Ramana have been recommended to be transferred from Andhra Pradesh High Court to Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh respectively while Justice Madhuresh Prasad will move from Patna High Court to Calcutta. Karnataka High Court judge Narendar G. has been recommended to be transferred to Andhra Pradesh HC.
The Collegium, comprising the CJI, Justices S K Kaul, Sanjeev Khanna, B R Gavai and Surya Kant, met on August 10 and recommended the aforementioned transfers.
