Ahead of the upcoming Chhattisgarh assembly elections, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday stated that the state will give an opportunity to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP party to form the next government in the state, news agency ANI reported. Slamming Rahul Gandhi's abroad visit, Biswa stated that the opposition should learn from former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who even as an opposition leader under the then Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao-led governemnt went to UNHRC's Geneva session and praised India. Contrary to which, according to the BJP leader, Rahul Gandhi goes abroad to insult the nation.

Speaking with media, CM Biswa stated: "There will be a change in Chhattisgarh, the people of the state will give the opportunity to PM Modi to form the govt...Oppostion should learn from Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He went to UN during the Nehru govt and he praised India. Today, when Rahul Gandhi goes abroad, he abuses the country."

During his tenure as Prime Minister, Rao appointed Vajpayee to lead the Indian delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHRC) special session in Geneva, where a Pakistan-sponsored motion to condemn India for its record on human rights in Jammu and Kashmir was successfully defeated.

Meanwhile, speaking on the Women's Reservation Bill tabled in Lok Sabha, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said: "Today is a proud day for the country... I congratulate PM Modi. The country will remember PM Modi for this historic day."

CM Sarma further claimed that a conspiracy against "Sanatan dharma" was being plotted in the Congress-ruled state of Chhattisgarh. He was addressing a rally in Chhattisgarh's Bhatgaon assembly constituency as part of the BJP's 'parivartan yatra' campaign ahead of the state elections, PTI reported.

“A conspiracy is being hatched against Sanatan culture in Chhattisgarh. Since Bhupesh Baghel was elected as chief minister, the influx of Rohingya (refugees from Myanmar) in the state has become a major issue,” the BJP leader was quoted by PTI in its report.

He further accused the INDIA coalition of planning a plot to create a "anti-Hindu" climate in the country. He said that the Congress (when it was in control) enabled Bangladeshis to enter Assam illegally, saying that "thousands of Bangladeshis live in Assam."  “In Chhattisgarh, Rohingya have started entering….Bhupesh Baghel says he worships Gau-mata (cow) but we don’t want this. We want you to say that you are a Hindu and devoted to Hinduism,” Sarma added.
