NEW DELHI: Today India is celebrating Chandra Shekhar Azad’s, popularly known as 'Azad', 112th birth anniversary. On Twitter, PM Modi also tweeted on his anniversary and wrote, “On his birth anniversary, my tributes to the great Chandra Shekhar Azad. A brave son of Bharat Mata, he sacrificed himself so that his fellow citizens get freedom from colonialism. Generations of Indians are inspired by his courage.”


Here are some interesting facts to know about the life and times of the great freedom fighter who never surrendered himself to British forces.



  1. Chandra Shekhar Azad, who was also known as Chandra Shekhar Tiwari, was born in the present-day Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh.

  2. Born on July 23, 1906, he took part in India's struggle for freedom at a very young age.

  3. Moved by the atrocity of the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy, he participated in the Non-Cooperation Movement which was led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920.

  4. He was part of Kakori Train Robbery of 1925 and the shooting of British police officer JP Saunders at Lahore in 1928.

  5. He passed away at Alfred Park in Allahabad on 27 February 1931 when he was just 25.
