The Chandigarh Police apprehended Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders and supporters who were demonstrating against the BJP concerning accusations of manipulation in the Chandigarh Mayor elections. According to the news agency ANI, the Chandigarh unit of AAP protested against the BJP over allegations of rigging in Chandigarh mayor election

Speaking about the protest, AAP leader SS Ahluwalia told news agency PTI, "We are currently on a hunger strike. The protest will continue until there is accountability for Anil Massi, and the imposter mayor is removed."

Earlier, Youth Congress members held a demonstration outside the mayor's office in Chandigarh on Wednesday. Tensions arose between the protestors and the police present at the scene, with Youth Congress workers chanting the slogan 'Bhrashtachar band karo' (Stop the corruption).

Subsequently, the police detained the protestors. Both the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress have approached the Supreme Court concerning the results of the Chandigarh Mayoral poll. A hearing took place on January 31 in the Punjab Haryana High Court, focusing on potential tampering with the results of the Chandigarh Mayor election.

Advocate General of Punjab Gurminder Gary was representing AAP and Congress candidate for mayor, Kuldeep Kumar, in the Punjab Haryana High Court. Chandigarh Municipal Corporation was represented by attorney Anil Mehta. The Punjab Haryana High Court granted Chandigarh Municipal Corporation and Chandigarh Administration three weeks to submit their responses in this case following the hearing of the entire case. The matter will next be heard on February 26, as reported by ANI.

Notably, the Supreme Court agreed to hear on Monday an AAP councillor's plea challenging a Punjab and Haryana HC order that refused to grant any interim relief to the party seeking fresh mayoral polls in Chandigarh. ALSO READ | Chandigarh Mayor Elections: Supreme Court To Hear AAP's Plea On Monday

On Tuesday, Manoj Sonkar of the BJP was declared as the new mayor of Chandigarh. He received 16 votes, while Kuldeep Tita of the Congress-AAP received 12 votes after eight votes were deemed invalid.

In response to eight votes in the Chandigarh municipal elections being ruled illegal, opposition politicians have accused the Congress and AAP of manipulating the results, targeting the BJP-led central government in the process.
