Uttarakhand minister Chandan Ram Dass died at the state's Bageshwar district hospital on Wednesday (April 26). The 63-year-old was admitted to the ICU of the district hospital after his health suddenly deteriorated, news agency PTI reported citing an official. Dass, a Bageshwar MLA (member of the legislative assembly), was in charge of social welfare and transportation.

Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his condolences on the sudden death of his cabinet colleague.

"I am stunned to know of the sudden death of my senior colleague in my cabinet, Chandan Ram Dass," Dhami said. "It’s an irreparable loss to politics and social service," he said in a tweet in Hindi.

The Uttarakhand government has decided to close all state government offices on Wednesday to mourn the loss of the leader.

The government has also declared a three-day period of mourning.

The state government offices in the district where the funeral will be held will be closed on the day of the funeral, according to the government order.

Since 2007, the BJP leader has represented Bageshwar in four consecutive assemblies, but he became a minister for the first time in Pushkar Singh Dhami's cabinet.
