Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress on Monday paid tribute to Jawaharlal Nehru on the occasion of his birthday and stated that without the "tremendous contribution" of India's first Prime Minister, the 21st century India "cannot be conceived," news agency ANI reported. 


Kharge referred to the former prime minister as a "champion of democracy" and claimed that, "despite difficulties," his ideas have advanced India's economic progress.


Taking to Twitter, Kharge stated: "Pandit Nehru -- the maker of modern India. 21st India cannot be imagined without his tremendous contribution. A champion of Democracy, his progressive thoughts furthered India's social,political & economic development, despite the challenges. My humble homage to a true patriot."






Paying tribute to Nehru, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his official Twitter handle writes: "On his birth anniversary, tributes to our former PM Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Ji. We also recall his contribution to our nation."





Pandit Nehru, the former prime minister, was born on November 14, 1889. This day is observed nationwide as Children's Day as a result of his affection for kids.


On the occasion of Jawaharlal Nehru's birth anniversary, UPA chair Sonia Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge presented flowers to his monument Shanti Van in the capital.
