New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs on Thursday denied reports of Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, raising the issue of controversial comments on Prophet Mohammed during a meeting with counterpart S Jaishanker.
MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi during a press briefing said that the issue was not raised during the conversation. “My understanding is that this issue was not raised during that conversation,” Bagchi said.
“My understanding is that this issue was not raised during that conversation,” the MEA spokesperson said when asked about the NSA & Iranian Foreign Minister meeting in wake of the controversial remark, quoted by news agency ANI.
Bagchi reiterated the official stance of the Government of India on the controversial remark that was said by now-suspended spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party, Nupur Sharma during a TV debate.
“We've made it pretty clear that the tweets and comments don't reflect views of the government,” he said. “This has been conveyed to our interlocutors as also the fact that action has been taken by concerned quarters against those who made the comments and tweets,” he added.
The BJP on Sunday had suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma and the party's Delhi unit media head Naveen Jindal after they allegedly made derogatory comments on the Prophet
