New Delhi: Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved policy on long-term leasing of Railways Land for implementing PM Gati Shakti framework. The policy will bring more revenue to Railways with an employment generation potential of about 1.2 lakh jobs.  "Union Cabinet has approved policy on long-term leasing of Railways' Land to implement PM Gati Shakti framework. 300 cargo terminals will be developed in 5 years," said Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Union Cabinet decisions.


Meanwhile, the cabinet has also approved the Pradhan Mantri Schools For Rising India (PM-SHRI) Yojana which will be a laboratory for the new National Education Policy (NEP) and under the first phase, 14,500 schools will be upgraded.


"The Union Cabinet has approved the launch of a new scheme for setting up PM-SHRI schools. Over 14,000 schools incl Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas will be strengthened to emerge as PM-SHRI schools," said Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan during the press conference.

On the occasion of Teachers' Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday announced a new initiative for the development and upgradation of schools across India. 


"Today, on Teachers Day, I am glad to announce a new initiative -- the development and upgradation of 14,500 schools across India under the Pradhan Mantri Schools For Rising India (PM-SHRI) Yojana. These will become model schools which will encapsulate the full spirit of NEP," PM Modi tweeted.


The new National Education Policy was launched in 2020. The NEP replaced the 34-year-old National Policy on Education framed in 1986 and is aimed at paving the way for transformational reforms in school and higher education systems.


Here Are The Key Decisions Announced By Union Cabinet:



  • Railway Land Licensing under PM Gati Shakti Programme cleared.

  • The new policy will help provide a land lease for a longer period of up to 35 years as against five years at present, Union Minister Anurag Thakur told the media after the cabinet meeting.

  • With an employment generation potential of about 1.25 lakh jobs, the policy will also bring more revenue to the Railways; 300 cargo terminals will be developed in five years.

  • The government said the PM Gati Shakti programme will help set up 300 cargo terminals and generate 1.25 lakh jobs.

  • Under the PM-SHRI schools scheme, over 14,000 schools, including Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas, will be strengthened to emerge as PM-SHRI Schools (PM ScHools for Rising India).

  • The total project cost would be Rs 27,360 crore for five years. Of this, the central share would be Rs 18,128 crore.

  • The government expects this scheme to benefit 187 lakh students.
