J&K UNREST

The 2016 unrest in Kashmir started after the death of militant Burhan Wani. A series of violent protests in the Muslim-majority Kashmir Valley, snowballed after his death.

Burhan Wani was a militant commander of the Kashmir-based Hizbul Mujahideen and was killed by Indian security forces on 8 July 2016. Anti-Indian protests started in all 10 districts of the Kashmir Valley, after his killing. Protesters defied curfew with attacks on security forces and public properties.

On 15 July, curfew was imposed in all 10 districts of the valley. Mobile services were suspended by the government.

Jammu and Kashmir Police and Indian Army used pellet guns, tear gas shells, rubber bullets and assault rifles to control the violent protesters which resulted in the deaths of more than 85 civilians. Over 13,000 civilians also reportedly got injured.

Two security personnel also died while more than 4,000 personnel were injured in the riots.
