Kerala reports 32,803 new COVID-19 cases, 21,610 recoveries and 173 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Death toll 20,961
Active cases 2,29,912


The test positivity rate is 18.76%. A total of 1,74,854 samples were tested during the last 24 hours.

Breaking News LIVE: Country Likely To Receive Above Normal Rainfall In Sept, Says IMD

The country is likely to receive above-normal rainfall in September, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. The weather body also informed that the country received 24 per cent less rainfall than normal in August.


The monsoon deficit now stands at nine per cent and this is expected to come down due to good rainfall during September, IMD director-general Mrutunjay Mohapatra said as per a PTI report.

At least 25 people were injured in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district on Tuesday after hundreds of local residents tried to enter a vaccination centre together, leading to a stampede, police said. Six of them were critically injured in the incident, and they are undergoing treatment at Jalpaiguri Sadar Hospital, a senior officer said.


“As soon as the main gate of Dhupguri Health Centre was opened, several people tried to get inside the facility pushing each other. A stampede-like situation arose there. Several women were injured. We are probing the matter," the officer said. Locals claimed that hundreds of people queued outside the vaccination centre since morning and social distancing protocols went for a toss.

The World Health Organization has said it is monitoring a new coronavirus variant known as "Mu", which was first identified in Colombia in January.


Mu, known scientifically as B.1.621, has been classified as a "variant of interest", the global health body said Tuesday in its weekly pandemic bulletin.


The WHO said the variant has mutations that indicate a risk of resistance to vaccines and stressed that further studies were needed to better understand it.

Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday appointed Dr. Parasaram Pattabhi Kesava Ramacharyulu as the new secretary general of the Upper House of Parliament.


Ramacharyulu has been working as secretary in the Rajya Sabha Secretariat since 2018 and succeeds Desh Dipak Verma, who demitted office after serving for four years.


As per the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, Ramacharyulu is the first ever Upper House employee to have risen to the secretary general’s post. Nine employees have become the secretary general of Lok Sabha so far.

Breaking News LIVE, September 1, 2021:  After setting the one crore-plus record in vaccinations last week, India has set a new record again, notching up over 1.28 crore jabs till 10pm on Tuesday. The country earlier saw nearly 1,08,99,699 crore doses administered on August 27, which was the highest daily jabs figure so far, as per the CoWIN platform.


But on Tuesday, the figure stood at 1,28,68,299 jabs till 10pm.


Fines amounting to Rs 90 lakh have been recovered from over 20,000 people for violation of COVID-19 guidelines in the Jammu district during the second wave of the pandemic, police said. "During COVID-19 second wave, we registered 450 FIRs and arrested 500 people for violation of SOP," SSP, Jammu, Chandan Kohli said. 


The SSP said more than 20,000 people were penalised, and fines worth Rs 90 lakh were recovered from them for not wearing face masks or not following Covid-appropriate behaviour in public places. He said people should not be complacent as there is a threat of a third wave of the pandemic.
