Three elderly devotees died due to heat and humidity at a religious gathering in Panihati in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Sunday.

She said that senior officials have rushed to the spot and all assistance is being provided.

"Distressed to know of 3 old devotees' death due to heat and humidity in Danda Mahotsav at ISKCON temple at Panihati. CP and DM have rushed, all help being provided. My condolences to the bereaved families, solidarity to devotees," she tweeted.

Dhrubajyoti Dey, Joint Commissioner of Police, Barrackpore commissionerate, said three persons were declared brought-dead at a hospital, after they fell seriously ill owing to the heat amid crowding during 'Doi-Chirey Mela' at a temple on the banks of River Hooghly in Panihati.

Breaking News LIVE: Blaze In Delhi's Karol Bagh Area, 39 Fire Tenders At Spot

Delhi witnessed another fire incident on Sunday as a massive blaze broke out in the Gaffar market in Karol Bagh area. As many as 39 fire tenders were rushed to the spot after a call regarding the incident was received by the Delhi Fire Service, reported news agency ANI. Delhi Police personnel also reached the spot upon receiving information.


""A serious fire call was received from a shoe market in Gaffar, Karol Bagh, at 4.16 am and 39 fire tenders were rushed to the site," PTI quoted Delhi Fire Service Director Atul Garg as saying.


The fire is under control and no one in trapped inside, reported ANI citing fire service. No injuries have been reported so far and the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. Further details are awaited.


This comes a day after a 64-year-old patient died at a hospital in Delhi's Rohini area after his oxygen support was disrupted due to a fire at the facility. The fire broke out on the third floor of Brahm Shakti Hospital, Pooth Khurd, officials said.

Breaking News LIVE: UP Police Arrest 237 People For Friday Violence

Uttar Pradesh police arrested 237 people from various districts in the state in connection with Friday's violence during protests against the controversial remarks of now-sacked BJP functionaries on Prophet Mohammad, with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath warning of "strictest" action against those attempting to vitiate the atmosphere.

In Saharanpur and Prayagraj, police officials said action will be taken against those arrested under the stringent National Security Act (NSA).

Among those arrested, 68 were held in Prayagraj and 50 in Hathras, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Prashant Kumar said in a statement on Saturday.

He said 55 people were arrested in Saharanpur, 28 in Ambedkarnagar, 25 in Moradabad, eight in Firozabad, three is Aligarh.

Breaking News LIVE: Senior Journalist Ashok Pahalwan Passes Away In Jammu

Senior journalist Ashok Pahalwan, 65, died here on Saturday, according to people close to him.

Pahalwan was ailing for some time.

He belonged to a Kashmiri Pandit family from the Shadipora-Manasbal area of Ganderbal district. He is survived by his brother.

Pahalwan started out as a reporter for Hind Samachar in the late 1980s. He moved to Jammu in the wake of emergence of militancy in Kashmir in 1990 and worked with various organisations including Reuters and Voice of America (VoA).

Pahalwan's last rites will be held on Sunday, those close to him said.

Prophet Row: Several States On The Boil, 2 Killed In Ranchi


Two persons succumbed to gunshot wounds in Jharkhand capital Ranchi on Saturday and fresh demonstrations were held in West Bengal's Howrah as tension prevailed in several parts of the country a day after the violent protests against the controversial remarks by BJP's now-sacked two functionaries on Prophet Mohammad.

Authorities suspended the Internet and tightened security in the affected districts as they cracked down on protesters allegedly involved in violence and clashes with police personnel on Friday, with nearly 240 people arrested in Uttar Pradesh alone. Cases have been also registered in Delhi, Maharashtra and other states. 


Prez Polls: Mamata Writes To Oppn CMs, Congress Says Appoint Someone Who Can Protect citizenry


West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday wrote to opposition leaders, requesting them to attend a meeting convened by her on June 15 in New Delhi to prepare a joint strategy for the upcoming presidential poll.


Banerjee sent a letter to 22 opposition leaders, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury.


Meanwhile, Congress said opposition parties should rise above their differences and elect a President who can protect the Constitution, institutions and the citizenry from the "ongoing onslaught" by the ruling BJP.


Amit Shah To Address IRMA Convocation Ceremony In Gandhinagar


Union Home Minister Amit Shah is undertaking a three-day visit to Gujarat and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, beginning Friday where he will chair a meeting of the Western Zonal Council, address convocation of the Institute of Rural Management Anand (IRMA), among others.


On Sunday, the Union minister will address the 46th convocation ceremony of IRMA, inaugurate or lay foundation stone of a number of development projects of the Gandhinagar Municipal corporation.


He will also lay the foundation stone for a development project in Sanand.


Congress To Hold Nationwide Pressers Over ED National Herald Crackdown


Sachin Pilot in Lucknow, Vivek Tankha in Raipur, Sanjay Nirupam in Shimla, Ranjit Ranjan in Chandigarh, Pawan Khera in Ahmedabad, Alka Lamba in Dehradun, Nasir Hussain in Patna, Madhu Gaur in Goa will hold press conference in connection with ED summons to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in National Herald case. 


In the states where national leaders will not reach, local leaders will hold a press conference. On Monday, Congress will also hold demonstrations across the country. In Delhi, all senior party leaders and MPs will march to the ED office along with Rahul Gandhi.
